Subject: SOS-FK in the Feb. VQT newsletter

The February VQT newsletter is out and has a "Fans of Forever Knight"
announcement box on page 2. It is based on email messages I sent to
Dorothy Swanson back in January, including the press reports. The first
sentence isn't quite the way I would have expressed it, but at least it
makes the point about contacting local stations and Tristar.

The text says:
Fans of USA's Forever Knight are campaigning
to interest syndicators in the show since USA has
        canceled it. (Columbia/TriStar Television is
completing production of the third season
episodes that were in doubt.) The organized fans
have made a big effort to get the word out to
        station programmers, through the NATPE
convention and an ad in Electronic Media, to ask
TriStar for a fourth season. VQTer Mary Anne
Espenshade is involved in this campaign and
        passes along information to VQT.

It then gives the web site URL and the PO Box address, for people to
get more information.

FK is also mentioned in the Members' Forum (excerpts from comments
members put on the monthly survey forms):
"A unique drama, this USA series is a surprisingly down-to-
earth character study. Production expenditures are simple yet
effective. Moody lighting and set decoration add to the effect
as all-too-human failings and strengths are earnestly explored.
At the same time, the immortality issues are dealth with in a
sensitive and often tongue-in-cheek manner that further
endears the characters to viewers ... They delve brilliantly
into the issue of women of the 90's loving men they 'can't
have'." (Lisa Sharp, White River, SD)

Lisa, are you on this list? Good timing to have a quote by someone
else to comment on the show. At least I know one other memeber is
voting for FK's quality.

Unfortunately, the quotes in the Members' Forum aren't always
attributed correctly, the survey forms have a place for membership
number and name and sometimes people apparently only put the number,
which then can get mistranslated. My name is listed with quotes on four
shows, but none of them are my comments! Three of the shows I've
never even seen.

This sounds like the X-Files book I found last weekend, called the
Complete Guide to The X-Files (or something to that effect). It
started with how the concept of the show developed, contained all
approiate interviews, had a complete synopsis of every ep. from
season 1 through season 3 including locations and ratings. It was
really a great book. I wish they could come out with a "Complete
Guide to FK." Maybe after the novels?

Subject: How to test without using the list

When those of you who sent test messages to Forkni-l beginning getting
listmail again, please save this for future reference.

There is no need to send test messages to a list in order to determine
if you have been set nomail or unsubbed. It is also not neccesary to
do this in order to test whether the list is held.

Here are the procedures.

To find out whether you are nomail or unsubbed, send a message to
listserv@p......., with no subject, signature or period at the
end of the command. I'm going to have to put the command in quotation
marks, or the listserv will bounce this message as a misdirected command.

"q forkni-l"

There, that's all you need. Just remember not to use the quotation marks.

For Fkfic-l and Fkspoilr, substitute the names of the lists. You can
send more than one query in the same message, but each must be on a
separate line.

Please note that you do *not* give your address or name. Doing so will
cause the command to bounce. The listserv picks up your address from
the header of your message.

You will get back either a list of options, which will tell you if you
have been set nomail, or a note that you are not subscribed.

If either is true and you have not received a note about the matter
from the owners, you were nomailed or unsubbed because your listmail
was bouncing. Simply reset yourself. The command is "set forkni-l mail",
without the quotes, or "set forkni-l digest", without the quotes, if
you were on digest. If you were unsubbed, just resubscribe.

If you are set to mail, then it's possible that the list is being
held at psuvm. To find out, send a message to listserv@p......., with the
command

"list"

Don't use the quotes in an actual command.

This will return you a list of all the lists which run at psuvm. If
a list is held, there will be a note in its entry.

If you're set mail, and there is no hold, the problem is that a node
somewhere between you and psuvm isn't forwarding mail. This happens
sometimes and there's nothing you or anyone else can do but wait. It's
like having the lines down with the phone system.

Subject: *PSUVM and LISTS*

This going out to all the lists I manage in one form or another..

Please.. DO NOT send notes to the listserv asking if people have received
mail. It just clogs things up. Please do what Lisa posted (for those of you
on the ANNERICE and ARBOOKS lists, Lisa posted a note to the FK lists for
members to send the following command to listserv@p....... ..
" Q <name-of-list>" without the quotes of course :-).

Mail DOES NOT travel in a straight path from you machine to PSUVM. It goes
through several gateways. If a gateway near PSUVM is down, mail will back up!
You all just have to be patient.

Obviously, all this is intended for future reference since by the time you
receive this message, mail will have been restored :-)

Dear everyone--I agree with those posting that it is ESSENTIAL that we stay
together and keep the Knight Alive on-list should there be a hiatus in
on-air *life*. Whoever said--if we forget, how can we expect them to
remember. . .was *right on* (I date myself every two sentences, don't I??)
Well, I'm sure I'm not the senior listmember, even if I'm a graying newbie...

I've caught up with the digests--I printed up a bunch to catch up and was up
reading till the wee hours last night----*but* (that isn't the right way to
do an exclamation is it??.....) I've *heard* rumor that someone offered to
buy the series and keep it in production and TRISTAR
refused......*&^%$#@......the eyes are turning, the eyes are
turning....help, I have to keep it under control, I'm at work.

I didn't find that in what I read---if it is true, ongoing, continuing,
relentless pressure (polite, of course)...slightly re-directed--------to
whoever offered to not give up!!!!!! and on TRISTAR, for God(dess) sake to
SELLLLL.

Whatevever, however.....if we hang tough, we *will* prevail......And yes, I
am most certainly, definitely, and for the long, long haul staying on the
list(s). This is a community and I am touched to (blood or regular) tears
at the *depth* of community.

I'll find time to write something more coherent, thoughtful and maybe even
fun on why FK is *the* BEST and why the FK fandom (kingdom, princedom,

Man, are the lists s-l-o-w this week. We musta broke it. I've not seen a
digest in 48 hours. Um... was I accidently set to no mail???

ANYWAY: I wasn't really aware that we were supposed to, like *win* the War,
either alone or as a faction. It's been pointed out to me by a very wise
woman that the various factions each work in a specific style and that it
seems to work out this way in each war. For instance: the Cousins always
start strong, but then, as they tend to be very individualistic people, they
splinter and go off on their own, committing mindless mayhem to no good
advantage--in other words, teamwork is not a great Cousin hallmark.
<Surprise, surprise.> That is a pretty good description of what I did in the
War, daddy. I had fun, mostly all by myself. A trio of cousins and I flooded
Nick's loft with a thousand gallons of Ribena/cows' blood (mixed!), and when
the Knighties shrugged that off with a few insults, I hired Jamie to trash the
Knightie leader, which she did beautifully. And all I had to do was take a
nude photo of Uncle for the nouvelle merc-in-training as payment for the
knightie-trashing. Easy-peasy. <gasp, shudder, wipes flashback sweat from
brow> Other than that, I spent much of the war writing FK filks and selling
virtual FK filk tapes and virtual FK music videotapes to all and sundry from
my office in CERK (I used a virtual PO box, so nobody could *get* me). I have
quite a tidy little sum of virtual cash in a virtual bank in virtual Toronto.
Who says only the Mercs make out in a War?

Should the cousins ever get as organized as, say, the Natpackers, we would be
very, very, very dangerous. To ourselves, too, not just to all of you.

Hi,

The FK connection here is actually a JP connection. In one of the dozens
of letters I've sent out recently, I mentioned that I have a tendency to
at least to in to almost anything featuring the FK cast and crew, citing
NB's recent appearance on Precinct and JP's new series "Matt Waters." I
received a lovely note from both syndie and network but was rather
disturbed by this note from a programming director. It was a
post-script at the end of e-mail......

"Personally, I like both FK and MW. See the Post? Looks like CBS is
pulling the plug on Matt Waters, among others."

Well, I gave him a quick call to ask which "Post" he was refering to and
he said it was in the Washington Post's TV Column on the 22nd.
Apparently American Gothic, Matt Waters and several other shows that I
don't watch are all on permanent hiatus with the "possibility" of CBS
showing some of the unaired episodes over the summer.

Can someone else check the Post?

If it's accurate, JP is having a real bummer of a month, isn't he?

Ngaire

I think TPTB really didn't do their historical research in this case. I
have one better. What about Lacroix telling Nick in first season that "I
taught Nero the tune, and together we watched Rome burn." Now Rome was
burned around 64 or 65 AD. In season 2 we see Lacroix was brought across
in 79 AD. So either Lacroix lied to Nick or perhaps he was musically
gifted since very young and did this with Nero when he was mortal. I
wasn't on the list for 1st and 2nd season FK so I don't know if this was
discussed. At least there haven't been any more historical
inaccuracies.

You know you've *definitely* been watching too much Forever Knight when...

1 - You notice a guy named Mederic Lacroix on an address list at work
and immediatly think: "Where does he come from? I didn't know that
Lacroix had a son named like that!"

2 - You see a girl in your English class that has yellow glowing eyes.
(but then again, you know that your new contact lenses prescription
     is a little off track...)

3 - You see a commercial on TV (while watching Forever Knight :) that
says: "Lemon Ivory liquid: there's nothing more powerful under the

We don't usually talk about fanfic too much on forkni-l and I'm usually

called Vice-versa was really really funny.

I can talk about it without spoiling it. Basically, it has all of the FK
characters writing online to a newsgroup about REAL LIFE; there is a
RLspoilr list and I believe a rlfic-l list. It is really funny and I
recommend it to people.

She took episodes from the last war and had the FK characters writing

of their "sigs".

If you haven't read it, find it and read it. Very amusing.

In the beginning of the show, if you remember, Nick flew up onto the fire
escape and then flew down and got the perp. That triggered Schanke into
wandering what's going on with Nick. Then the fact that Nick explained
the reason for riding in the trunk - "I don't tan, I don't burn, I

obviously didn't believe her. Schanke flashbacks and remembers the
police finding bottle of blood in Nick's refrig (from Killer Instinct)
but Nick had told him that he used it to thicken his oils. Schanke had
started a sheet on Nick as John Doe with it giving brief descriptions -
Janette, allergic to the sun, *blood* (I forget what else he wrote). He
fell asleep at his desk with the sheet sitting out. Vera woke him up to
let him know his wife called. She looks at the sheet and tells him that
he must be looking for a vampire. Then it clicked and he started doing
research. Another clue, from his research, is that the vampire follows
his master - Schanke saw that both Janette and Nick have a picture of
LaCroix and he also remember Nick telling him that "it's an acquired
taste" in regards to listening to "The NightCrawler." Also, from
research, he learns that vampires can move very quickly and has
incredible strength - he remembers instances of Nick moving very fast and
Nick hold a perp out the window and Schanke telling Nick to bring him in
because he should think of the paperwork if he drops him.

Can't remember what else he found. Have it on video and have to go watch
it again.:)

Hope that helps.

As just such a third-season newbie, I have to chime in that while *I*
like season 3, I can't wait to see the seasons which are so good that
they cause people to trash this one!
And BTW, isn't it a good sign that USA will be bringing FK back
to prime time, even without new episodes? Can't we take this as the
first visible triumph of War 6? Is my desperate optimisim threatening my
status as a future Knightie? :)

I think you are thinking of "Degree of Guilt" He plays a lawyer in that
one. In "I Know My Son Is Alive" I think this is the one where he has
only a few lines and plays like a hitman? Right? Not really sure because
when this one aired before, it wasn't shown with closed captioning :(

I could be wrong though.

And there was a picture of President Kennedy in the police chief's
office, as well.

As for the Communism thing, remember that Nick wouldn't age. The resemblance
(if anyone should happen to notice) could be passed off as some kind of
family connection. I always wondered why he didn't use this excuse with
Alyce in Dark Knight when she found that 100 year old picture in the
archaeology book? "Yes, one of my ancestors was involved in the dig at
Altun Kinal--I have his journals, so that's how I knew about the cup..."
yadda, yadda, yadda. (Rick's Nick couldn't use this, of course, because
there was a scar on his neck, which Ger's Nick doesn't have.) After all, I
look amazingly like a many-times-great aunt and I very much doubt anyone would
believe I'm *really* a vampire. He could also use this excuse if anyone
in Toronto questions his resemblance to a 60s Chicago cop ("Yeah, that's
my uncle--I was named for him.")

Me too. This was the episode that had pre-Tracy Lisa Ryder, too.

I have these as bmp files. I can send them as attached files if you wish to
receive them that way. Otherwise, you can go to Jamie MR's home page (I
don't have the URL, but you can get there via the Save FK page) and download
them there as a zip file. If you get the zip file, there are a ton of FK
bmp files inside. Jamie MR put them together.

Thanks to Dianne's generosity (Dianne, are you really a Merc? You are much

up on my web site. If you have *any* questions about Wars, please look
here first. It duplicates a lot of what is on the FKFIC Web site, but has
the advantage of being up to date (the late post in there is dated 2/21/96)
