Date sent: 21-FEB-1996 02:14:25 Yes! Finally I caught the references to Michael Praed! I rented a movie with him in it (a vampire movie, in fact). As I was watching it, I saw the resemblence to Ben Bass. My mom thought I was crazy, when about ten minutes into the movie I blurted out - "Ohmigosh! He does look like Vachon!" She gave me that "funny farm candidate" look. Well, aside from the fact that the local deputy has begun to follow me around town at night, I'd say I'm having a pretty good week. For some reason, I'm getting good vibes about the future of FK (call me crazy, I know how that sounds, but I call 'em like I feel 'em). BTW, a tip for the more vindictive of the group. It seems to me that the SONY people in Japan wouldn't appreciate the A-bomb being given the same significance as a TV show, no matter how good we think the show is. I wholeheartedly agree with the above. In fact, I have made a new friend because I subscribed to this list :) (Bows to Cousin Cherri) whom I never would have known about if I hadn't. :) This list is about more than fans of a TV show. This list is about people who have dreams, hopes, aspirations (sp) that go way beyond the show :) To me, this list is about people who have the guts to question "the popular opinion" of how things should be. We are able to say to those who ask, why? Why not! We each, in our own way, are willing to "fight the good fight" . We also seem to believe, as Winston Churchill, or was it Franklin Roosevelt?, put it (paraphrasing) "There is nothing to fear, but fear, itself) :) Or as someone ( I think it was Nathan Hale) said....... I'm in for the long haul. Not once before have I been a part of such a Community of people (mortals and immortals alike :-)). This is a wonderful group of people who are polite - even in disagreements. We often differ in opinions of episodes, but what is life, if there was only one side to a story. It broadens our horizons. The Fan-Fiction is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our writing talents and have others enjoy what we write. It also serves as complementary to the show, when the characters are given background in the stories. More often than not, I can see through various writers' contributions, that I see the character in a new light, whether it be humourous, tragic, or dramatic. Even if the characterizations are not favourable, the understanding is there. If anything else it often provides more background to the characters where there has been none on the screen. The Fan-Fic Wars: A great time. Where else can you have 100+ FK fans in Toronto interacting with each other and the characters of choice (aside from conventions :-))? Walli" <gjwalli@m.......> Subject: retrieving story parts via Listserv Folks, Several people have asked for updated information on retrieving story parts that they may be missing from FKFIC-L. While asking the authors to send those missing parts may be an option, it may be difficult for several reasons. You cannot ask the author or any other kind soul on FKFIC-L for the missing part because only stories are posted on FKFIC-L; no chatter is allowed. Some authors are only subscribed to FKFIC-L, not FORKNI-L where requests for missing posts should rightly be directed. Second, some authors only have Internet access through pay-per-line subscriptions, making it a costly enterprise to send the story even once much less to all the people who may have missed portions of it. The listserv at PSUVM.PSU.EDU which handles the mailing of FKFIC-L posts has a few simple commands you can use to great effect in retrieving the pesky missing posts. The commands that I've found most useful involve retrieving files without knowing the exact title of a story (sort of a keyword search), retrieving files for a day that I was out of the office (or my mailer program crashed, or Murphy's Law simply took over), and retrieving mail for an author that I've found particularly intriguing. These three procedures are detailed below. For those of you who have been around long enough to remember, these commands were posted with the very first FAQ. I've updated them to reflect newer dates and stories and I've made them a little easier to read. And I have listowner permission to send this. :) --------------------------------------------------- TO RETRIEVE A STORY WITHOUT KNOWING THE EXACT TITLE --------------------------------------------------- Let's say I was looking for a missing story part. I can't remember the exact title of the story, but I know it has the word "velvet" in it. I send the following message to the listserv: To: listserv@p....... Subj: // Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * Search velvet in fkfic-l Index /* By sending these commands, I am asking the listserv to send me an index listing of every message archived for FKFIC-L that contains the word "velvet" in it. There are several things to note here: (1) the case of the word "velvet" is totally irrelevant; (2) there's nothing in the subject line; (3) I don't send the message to FORKNI-L or FKFIC-L directly, but to the listserv machine that handles these lists; and (4) the above commands must be typed in EXACTLY as I have them typed above. This is the message I received from the listserv: ----- Begin Included Message ----- From: "L-Soft list server at PSUVM (1.8b)" <LISTSERV@p.......> Subject: File: "DATABASE OUTPUT" > Search velvet in fkfic-l --> Database FKFIC-L, 26 hits. > Index Item # Date Time Recs Subject ------ ---- ---- ---- ------- 000014 96/02/01 23:38 57 "A Taste of Black Velvet" (0/29) 000017 96/02/02 00:29 61 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (1/29) 000018 96/02/02 00:37 105 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (2/29) 000019 96/02/02 00:41 181 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (3/29) 000029 96/02/02 20:29 169 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (4/29) 000030 96/02/02 20:47 184 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (5/29) 000031 96/02/02 20:51 231 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (6/29) 000032 96/02/02 20:53 191 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (7/29) 000036 96/02/03 13:22 136 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (8/29) 000038 96/02/03 13:53 241 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (9/29) 000039 96/02/03 14:11 270 ADULT: " A Taste of Black Velvet" (10/29) 000040 96/02/03 14:22 179 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (11/29) 000042 96/02/03 18:19 114 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (12/29 000050 96/02/04 12:03 219 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (13/29) 000051 96/02/04 12:11 215 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (14/29) 000052 96/02/04 12:16 204 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (15/29) 000053 96/02/04 12:27 234 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (16/29) 000054 96/02/04 12:45 209 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (17/29) 000057 96/02/04 22:23 243 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (18/29) 000058 96/02/04 23:11 153 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (19/29) 000091 96/02/07 09:41 253 A Little Knowledge (3/7) 000095 96/02/07 21:45 284 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (20/29) 000097 96/02/07 22:02 266 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (21/29) 000098 96/02/07 22:30 159 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (22/29) 000099 96/02/07 22:45 210 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (23/29) 000100 96/02/07 23:18 255 ADULT: "A Taste of Black Velvet" (24/29) ----- End Included Message ----- I notice from this list that "A Taste of Velvet" is the story I'm looking for and that the installment that I want is "A Taste of Black Velvet (16/29)" which has the item number 000053. Since I would really like to complete my set of the installments for this story, I'm going to ask the listserv to send me a copy of this file. This is the message I send: To: listserv@p....... Subj: // Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * Search velvet in fkfic-l Print all of 000053 /* This tells the listserv to send me one copy of the file "A Taste of Black Velvet (16/29)", thus saving Marcia Tucker and countless other people the time of sending me a copy of the file. If I discover that I really need both part 16 and part 17, then I would replace "Print all of 000053" with "Print all of 000053 000054" and send the request off on its merry way. --------------------------------------------- TO RETRIEVE MAIL FOR A PARTICULAR DAY OR DAYS --------------------------------------------- Computers are notoriously susceptible to Murphy's Law: at the most critical juncture in a story, usually when the villain looks like she might actually win, your mailing program will send the one story part you absolutely must read off to the same area of heaven to which single socks and small dogs go. To retrieve mail for a particlar range of days, let's say while I was on vacation, I would send the following message: To: listserv@p....... Subj: // Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * search * in FKFIC-L from 96/02/01 to 96/02/29 print all /* This asks the listserv to send me all of the posts sent to FKFIC-L during the month of February 1996. Note that I simply asked for all the posts to be sent without actually seeing a list of the file names. If you want to pick and choose which files you want, simply replace the words "print all" with "index" and then follow the procedures detailed above for printing specific messages. --------------------------------------- TO RETRIEVE MAIL BY A PARTICULAR AUTHOR --------------------------------------- Everyone has a favorite autho. I understand the fanatical need to get everything by a particular author. Let's say that I want all of Henry Wycoff's crossover stories. I would send the following message: To: listserv@p....... Subj: // Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * search * in FKFIC-L where sender contains wyckoff index /* This tells the listserv that I want a list of all the posts that were sent by the userID wycoff (which is Mr. Wycoff's userID right now). Note that it is again possible to replace the "index" command with a "print all" command, but Mr. Wycoff's stories are very very long, too many, in fact for some people to have sent to them in one day. So again, pick and choose from the list that listserv sends you and then follow the instructions above for retrieving specific messages using the "print all" command. I hope these commands help you all. If you've got a different kind of search that you need to accomplish, let me know and I'll figure out if it's possible and then send you instructions on how to accomplish it. And if you have trouble with the above commands or instructions, let me know and I'll see what I can do to help you out. This is from the FK Fiction Bibliography I maintain: FK Wars The FK Wars are round robin fan fiction. A basic plotline is introduced and then other people add parts to the story. In the words of author Susan Garrett "The point of the wars is to learn about each other while creating a slightly odd, cracking good story." This is one case where a war really isn't a war, but a series of stories, usually practical fiction jokes, played on willing participants in the war. Currently, five wars have occurred. An unofficial sixth war started with the impending cancellation of FK: FKWARS I: A Call to Arms FKWARS II: Application Forthcoming FKWARS III: All Things Fun FKWARS IV: Coup D'Etat FKWARS V: Chess FKWARS VI: And This Time, It's Personal. [in progress, title unofficial] The titles for the first five fiction wars listed here were all taken from the subject line of the first OFFICIAL post (always sent by the person sponsoring the war). At least he doesn't sit around moping about everything. Whine, whine, that's all he ever does. IMO- it takes all kinds, sometims you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't. I still think that man needs to have a raging affair with another(female JADFE people) vampire from his past. Maybe some one Nick knows too... O love triangle! Jealousy, fights, fangs! I like it! I *love* lists, so what the heck... YOU MIGHT BE *DARK* KNIGHTIE IF... 1. You drool over Nick whether he's being good and drinking protein shakes *or* biting people 2. You actually like it better when Nick vamps out 3. You find scenes where he bites the female-neck-of-the-week incredibly sexy 4. You really don't understand the fuss over Nick drinking human blood. It isn't like he had to kill anyone for it. 5. As in #4, you think that drinking human blood would probably put Nick in a good mood 6. You wish that Nick would just get off his behind and bring Natalie across 7. You wait in vain for Nick to take his shirt off... in fact, you hope he gets more biting/love scenes because at least he gets to wear something a bit more open at the top 8. You like it when Nick and LaCroix get on with each other 9. You're upset Janette left because now Nick doesn't have *that* connection to his true nature 10. You feel like smacking Nick upside the head when he starts angsting 11. You think that if Nick could just accept himself as a vampire, he'd be much happier. 12. Btw, I would really like to know how come they're going ahead with the FK novels if they're so sure there isn't an audience for new episodes. Or have we made the mistake of being so literate in our campaign that they're paying us the compliment of assuming we actually read. <sarcasm off> Cousin Lisa -- "That will be trouble." Because they'll sell even better with the show off the air (temporarily, we hope). We're all going to need a fix. Besides, as I understand it, the novelizations are almost pure profit for TriStar so they have nothing to lose.
