But they both come from the Feb 12 (1996) issue of Business Week. on p. 73 A biotech company called Somatogen has been working on a genetically engineered red-blood-cell substitute called Optro (weird name). The pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly has invested in its development and will market it -- if the upcoming expanded trials show promise. Just what could this mean for our modern-day vamps? No problem with tainted blood here (a la _Fever_), but would it have the same kick as human blood? Too bad Nat hasn't looked into this area of research. on p. 38-9 The have a short review of the recent rebellion over the Neilsen hegemony. They mention Chase Carey's (Fox TV Chairman) statements in Las Vegas at the end of Jan (NATPE, I guess) as well as Neil S. Braun's (NBC Television President) plans to create a new service to replace the Neilsens. It is a nice summary, but I'm not going to type it all in. Me? I just want to be a pain in the butt now. You know, the proverbial thorn in someone's side. I'm gonna be here cranking out letters and whatever for a while yet Just because I don't like being ignored (if there are typos in here its because I smashed the middle finger of my left hand this morning and there's a big bandage on it). And because TriStar thinks they can just get rid of us because they're a big, faceless corporation. It's sort of like Andy Dupre in "The Shawshank Redemption." He wanted new books for the prison library, so he wrote a letter a week to the state legislature. After a while, they sent him some old books, a check for $200 dollars and a request to stop writing. He decided to write *two* letters a week to the state legislature after that. Eventually he got his library. As I said to Susan last night, we're now a package deal with TriStar. If Sony sells TriStar, they'll be sending us along with them to their new owners. I take a perverse pleasure in that, for some reason. -- Sharon A. I've been away for six days. Didja miss me? <g> And yes, I had a lovely time in Toronto, and yes, the tattoo is healing nicely, thank you very much. Now, to business: First of all, the rules of the FORKNI-L lists are here for everyone's benefit. There are really only three of them: Stay On Topic, Don't Waste Bandwidth, and We Are Friends Here. All the points I'm about to make are merely variations on the theme. Repeated violations of list rules can lead to being set nomail/nopost for a week or longer, and I really don't want to have to do this, so READ THIS POST, and SAVE THIS POST, and consult it as necessary, so that I don't have to play Enforcer. (I can't. My fangs aren't long enough. And I'm much better with warm fuzzies than I am with whips and chains. Really.) This is not necessarily a complete summary of the list rules, just highlights of the ones that have been broken lately. It sounds more complex than it is -- basically, if you stay on topic, are considerate of your neighbors, and don't use excessive bandwidth, you're okay. But read the rules ANYWAY. Yes, you. Even if you never post, and think you'll never need them. If you don't, I will know; and I will *haunt* you. I have that power. <g> ----- 1. FKSPOILR: Subject lines on the spoiler list are NOT supposed to reveal anything of what the episode is about! Your subject line on FKSPOILR should consist of: SPOILER: Episode Title. Anything else is risky and potentially quite annoying to your fellow listmembers. Annoyed listmembers are unhappy listmembers, and unhappy listmembers complain to ME, and I have enough e-mail, thank you. <g> 2. FKFIC-L: Is reserved for fiction ONLY. People who subscribe only to the fiction list do so in order to receive fiction without extraneous messages; other postings only inconvenience them. All not-fiction postings MUST be sent to FORKNI-L, no matter how 'on-topic' they might seem. Which leads to corollary 2a: Spoiler Fiction -- should be posted to FKFIC-L, with a subject line to the effect of: Story Title (1/1) SPOILER: Episode Name -- and a clear warning at the top of the story as to what eps you're spoiling. And corollary 2b: Adult Fiction -- should carry the subject line ADULT: Story Title (1/1) so that people who're set to filter out adult fiction won't get it. And a description of how the story fits into the adult topic, so that people know what to expect from the content. 3. No Cross Posting: Post each message ONE time. Posts belong either on forkni-l, fkfic-l, or fkspoilr -- NOT on two or three of 'em. (Yes, I know I'm doing it. But I'm an assistant listowner, and this is a rules post, which means I can just *barely* get away with it. You... can't.) 4. The Four-Line Quote Rule: When replying to someone else's post, you may only quote four lines of that post in your reply. If addressing multiple points in that post, you may quote four lines, then reply, then quote another four lines, then reply, and so forth. That's FOUR lines, okay? Let's count them together: one, two, three, four. Not eight, not six. Four. Okay? (And posts that quote three lines from one person and three from another before going into the reply are definitely pushing it.) 5. Sig Length: The latest word from Jaye (She Who Must Be Obeyed) is: five (5) lines, including all text, graphics and blank space. 'Nuff said. 6. WE ARE FRIENDS HERE: The Forkni-L lists have always operated on a basis of mutual respect. If someone tells you that you have offended them, the proper response is, "I'm sorry." Of course, this might lead to further discussion and debate, and perhaps an agreement to disagree -- but we do not flame each other, we do not disrespect each other; we behave like civilized people here, and this is not a point I should even have to address. This leads to corollary 6a: I am an assistant listowner. If you think I've done something wrong, tell me. If you think I am a total smeghead, complain to me, or directly to Jaye (jap8@c.......) if you don't want to deal with me. You have that right; and if something's wrong, I want to know about it. But for as long as I am an assistant listowner, I'm going to do my best to keep the list running smoothly; that's my job, that's what I signed on for. If you don't like it, tell Jaye and/or me; talking about it amongst yourselves will do nothing to modify the situation, now, will it? And finally, last for now because eleven hours on a bus can really take their toll: 7. "Me-Too" posts: It is normally considered improper to post merely for the purpose of saying "Me, too". HOWEVER, I have no intention of enforcing this policy as far as the "I'll stay on list after cancellation too" posts. Right now, I think that although this is fluff, it's positive fluff, and we all kind of need to hear that sort of affirmation. BUT: if you're going to post to tell us that you, too, are staying on list come hell or high water, tell us why! What makes the list, and the show, important to you? This is the kind of exchange that matters, above and beyond mere agreement. Tell us why you're sticking with Forever Knight and with the forkni lists; this is what elevates a post beyond "me-too" into the level of discussion. And again, if you're going to quote previous posts, KEEP IT FOUR LINES OR LESS. Pleeeeease. Assistant Listowner Jamie, throwing off the mantle of responsibility (and watching it crumple into a disheveled heap on the floor, next to the catbox) and going off to sleep, perchance to dream of a world in which TriStar is a gentle and benevolent god, and the night truly is forever... -- KEEP THE FAITH! -- Jamie M.R. <immajer@p.......> The Illustrated C.O.U.S.I.N. & 13th Natpacker -- Mercenary SFK WebGoddess -- Asst. That's all >true (though it was a Scottish accent, and he was claiming to come from >Edinborough) and Tippi wrote: >>He shoulda consulted NB for advice on how to do Scottish accents. ;)<< But GWD does a terrific Scots accent (and many others) on the "Hauntings: A Classic Collection" audiotape! I'd wager the one he does during "The Body Snatchers" by R. L. Stevenson is an equal match to NB's or better! Can you say, "...of the clan Macleod"? ;D BTW, today in the mail I got a very nice brochure from Tangled Web Audio about their audio tapes! Besides the aforementioned one read by GWD, there is described also Ger's newest one, "Forebodings: American Classics", which includes a favorite of mine, "An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce. The tapes will be available, the brochure says, in March 1996. There's also an audio book of the "Carmilla" vampire story by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, BTW. Actually, every single offering in the brochure looks like a winner to me! Tangled Web information can be found at their web site at: http://www.eidos.ca/tangled/ Um, this also is not a paid advertisement! I've been savoring Ger's readings in "Hauntings" and just want others to be able to enjoy them as well! Incidentally, Ger, to my uncultured ear, rarely sounds like Nick on the tape - but the occasional flashes of "that" voice are cherished! And the accents are wonderful! Obligatory FK note: Since I was brought across sometime in the middle of the second season, I really look forward to discussing earlier episodes on the list! I've seen all the first season tapes and some of my favorite episodes are in there. Bring them on! Marcia Tucker ScFiMarci@a.......
