My sister is going to make a commercial for the SOS-FK effort. (She is currently trying to get info as to who owns copyright, if it is owned by Paragon we will probably be able to get it, if it is owned by TriStar...well, how likely is it that they would give us permission...in which case she will make it without any copy right material) Kira spoke with the San Francisco station (KOFY) that airs FK. They show it twice, 1:00am Saturday morning, and 11:00pm Saturday night, the 11:00pm episode is filled completely, but the 1:00am show is $75 per 30 sec spot. However, they are offering a deal, if we choose to buy the Highlander package instead (which includes 2 airings during first run eps of Highlander), they will throw in 2 FK slots for free. And because it also advertises for the station they will reduce the rate even farther. (The problem is that as is, the Highlander pack costs $900. Now, even reduced is expensive, and she only makes $55 per week and I don't have a job.) She was supposed to have a meeting with the local, local syndie last night, but the night manager had to reschedule for tonight. Toni (thanks Toni!) faxed Kira a bunch of info to take to the meeting, and she will find out how much it will costs to air the spot on their station during FK and ST:TNG reruns. OK, I know this is a lot, but I'm almost done. I promise. Kira is a great editor and I have no doubt the commercial will turn out great (although I am used to helping out in the editing room). If anyone else wants/is able to buy air time at their syndie and wants a customized one *for their station* e-mail me ASAP (there will be tape and shipping costs involved). But I need to know *YESTERDAY*, because Kira has to generate graphics for each station. Please only request it if you can/will do it. Otherwise Kira is going to have to rack up editing room time for nothing...and as we all know, time is of the essence. I don't know what they are going to look like yet, because, obviously, we don't know if we are going to be able to get copyright permission or not. It could end up being really simple computer generated graphics, or (prefferabley) clips from the show. [In case we can use clips, I need people from the Bay Area who have eps on *FAST SPEED* who would be willing to loan Kira the tapes, she will come get them from you, to e-mail me. Kira doesn't have much of an ep collection and what she does have are all on slow speed, so we need someone elses.] The head legal person at Paragon is out of the office until Monday, so Kira can't start working on it until she talks to her. But I am working on the voice over script tonight (if anyone has any ideas, lemme know). If there are legal ramifications that I have missed or some reason we shouldn't do this SOMEONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW NOW! Otherwise, it is underway. I don't want to ask this, especially cosidering that Laurie has yet to recoup all of the money she fronted for NATPE and the bags and everything, but if someone *wants* to help with costs please e-mail me. But I would prefer it if we could check into running the commercial in as many areas as possible (Star Trek and Highlander are good shows to run it during as well). So money would be better spent if we spread it around. The final thing is, I know Annmarie's number was on the flyers, the problem is that because there are a lot of people who we are trying to reach who do not have web access, we need another way for them to reach us. We have an extra phone line that can quickly (and, thanks to a PacBell special this month, fairly cheaply) be converted into an 800 number. If we get positive feed back we'll keep it, and if we don't we can get rid of it. Finally the Save FK Homepage address will of course be in the commercial. If there is anything we are missing, or haven't thought of, or whatever, please, please, please let me know. The sooner the better. One oway or the other the commercial will have to be finished by the middle of next week, which means we miss Avenging Angel for sure, but hopefully soon after that it will be up and running. Can someone tell me what (if any) eps are after AA. Whew! I think that is everything. For now. Kira is also going to try and convince her friends at the station that the effort is a viable news story as well, but I think we stand a better chance with the commercial. I hope some other list members are planning to be there because while looking over the panel list, I had two ideas. One kind of panel is the introduction to a fandom presentation, I'd be interested in doing one for FK if I could get a couple other people to help. Or if someone else is already planning one, I'd be willing to help. I don't collect pictures, and I don't have any way to print out gifs/jpgs from the web, so someone who could bring pictures of the characters from all seasons would be good. I do collect fanzines and could bring my FK zine information. We would want to do an SOS flyer, even though the con isn't till May. The second idea is for a panel on the SOS effort. It's too late to suggest panel topics without also supplying the panelists, but if any of the NATPE 7 or other organizers are going to be at the con, it would be useful to pass on their experiences to other fandoms. I've only been a letter writer/money contributer, but I'd be willing to help with a panel. The panelist forms don't have to be in until the end of March so if anyone is interested in working with me on either of these, send me private email. -- Mary Anne Espenshade mae@a....... http://www.inwap.com/u/mae/ "I worked late on my birthday and nobody brought ME a cute vampire!" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Feb 1996 18:01:27 -0500 From: eugenio lobaina <elobai01@f.......> Subject: STATION REPLY IN MIAMI, FL and an Important effort Hi all! I am delurking after months of silence to actually post something to the list which may be of interest. I got a reply letter from my local syndie station WBFS TV-33. Here is the letter: -Dear Gene, - -Thank you for your letter. Though it is popular in Miami, the program -Forever Knight has struggled year to year in the national ratings. The -distributer of the program, Columbia TriStar Television Distribution, -has announced that the program will not be available in syndication for -Fall 1996. Should the program return to syndication, we will certainly -consider it for our lineup. Once again, thank you for taking the time to -write. - -Sincerely, - Tracy Swann - Programming Director I also called in and another exec. told me the show is doing OK (so-so). Not great BUT not bad. They also asked for FK at NATPE but it wasn't available. The decision is now in the hands of Columbia Tristar. Now we all know that Tristar has gone from "canceled" to "undecided". This is the time for us to double our efforts. Everyone please try to do something. I have only posted like once or twice but I've been on this list since Aug. 95. IF ANYONE is in the South Florida area please email me privately. HERE'S WHY, I have heard a few friends say they were going to some Television Preview convention in a couple of weeks. It would be a great place for us to pass out flyers. I will make every effort to get in touch with you if you contact me, since several people passing out flyers are better than one. I also wanted to thank the NATPE 7 for all their efforts. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have had that big an impact. I also think Laurie Fenster should not have to pay all that money out of her pocket. If anyone can send anything please do. Remember all the publicity we have gotten through her efforts. IT ISN'T FAIR THAT SHE SHOULD FRONT ALL THE MONEY FOR A CAUSE WE ALL BELIEVE IN. I think some people have not sent money because they don't have any at the momment or perhaps they aren't working. I have yet to send mine because I only recently started working, but I have emailed her the amount I shall be sending. EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS. I also called GNP and they told me to call back, but I think Fred's CD should be out soon because they announced it at the end credits of HUMAN FACTOR (SORRY if this has been mentioned already, I am behind on my digests, which is one of the reasons I never post). I think the CD should be awesome! Let me also remind everyone of what Mr. Mollin did for us and how he helped our cause. It was he who notified us of the situation. Let's show our appreciation OK. Let's put our best effort forward to support our favorite show and to keep these BRILLIANT actors working. Let us enjoy AT LEAST one more year of their work IF NOT MORE. The more seasons we have, not only the more shows we have to enjoy but the better the chances of getting the episode tapes released and the syndicated earlier seasons rerun. OUR STRENGTH IS IN OUR UNITY, let's not forget. Everybody keep up the good work and keep those discussions coming. I will shut up now....... A store that can order individual videos should be able to get Nick Knight. Also try record stores and maybe those big book/record/video stores like Borders and Barnes & Noble. They often order single copies of books & records for people, why not videos? Bottom line is, you have to ask. You won't find Nick Knight sitting on the shelf, it's too obscure. I didn't give the above example to necessarily defend what vampires do or don't do. I gave the above example to show the other side of your argument (that people who kill children are disturbed and heartless.) I was trying to show that it is possible to do what seems the worst possible thing to US, but seems to be the best possible thing to SOMEONE else. :) I mean, yes, it seems like the FK vamps don't go to the far east very often, but even if we look at it from a strictly Western POV, there are still plenty of examples of humans killing humans under forgivable, even glorified, circumstances. If we're going to judge vampires (or any group), let's do it by their own standards, yes? At least for long enough to see it from their POV. If we judge Lacroix by vampire standards, he does not seem particularly evil. Heck, he seems like a freakin boyscout! However, if we judge Nick by human standards (as he seems to judge himself) then he comes out looking like a real sicko. ;) According to human standards, just *trying* to be good isn't good enough. So if you're going to judge vampires by human stanards, judge them all. Even the ones like Nick who try NOT to be bad, still slip up on occasion. We wouldn't forgive a human serial killer if he TRIED not to kill again, but goofed up and DID kill again. I'm just giving all the FK vampires the benefit of the doubt by judging them on their own standards. ;) Remarkably generous for a Cousin, ain't I? Ok, I'll go back to imaging Uncle as a boy scout now... ahem! Not quite a vampire yet, but definitely better than human. I the example I cite is the one with the multiple personality vampire (Monica) who didn't know she was a vampire. Nick could not sense her presence, but did sense Urs. I agree that LC is more human than he would ever admit. However, I don't think that he's nothing but a big bully. Watch human Factor and then tell me you think he's just a bully.....There are so many dimensions to LC's persona that they would need to give him his own show every week just to scratch the surface. If we judge Lacroix by vampire standards, he does not seem particularly evil. Heck, >he seems like a freakin boyscout! However, if we judge Nick by human >standards (as he seems to judge himself) then he comes out looking like a >real sicko. ;) Whoa, talk about your double standards! Yes, yes, Nick does judge himself by human standards. However, he cannot possibly live up to those standards because of his nature. We cannot judge him by those standards any more than we can judge other humans by comparing them to God. Follow me here. Most humans who consider themselves moral people would like to be perfect. However, we are human, not God, so we can never attain that perfection (original sin, anyone?). As much as we might strive for that goal, we are never going to reach it. Nick is in much of the same situation. He wants to live up to human standards, but he is a vampire, not a human. How can we judge him as a human anymore than we can judge ourselves against perfection? Nick's becoming a vampire is his own personal version of original sin. Because of the nature of the beast inside him, he cannot achieve humanity anymore than we can achieve perfection. If he were to become human, THEN we could judge him by human standards. In the mean time, we can only judge him based on what he is, not what he wants to become. Oh, BTW, someone made the comment that they would rather be locked in a room with LaCroix than with Nick, since they know where LaCroix stands. I'd have to disagree. You know that LaCroix would kill you right away if he were hungry. Nick, however, would at least try to control himself. You might not be certain that he could, but you would have a h*ll of a better chance of coming out of the room alive if you were locked in with Nick. I got a response from KHQA-tv, in Hannibal, MO/Quincy, IL, and as we all need some positive feedback and words of encouragement from a classy person/station, I wanted to pass this on to you: Dear Ms. Orel, I'm thrilled to hear from another Forever Knight fan! Thank you for your audience building efforts in Kirksville, we need all the viewers we can get. We don't know yet if the program will continue in production but if it does we will renew the show. I've enclosed a blank VHS tape in case you need to record it for later viewing. Sincerely, John Hurley Vice President/General Manager KHQA-TV This is a CBS affiliate on which I have watched all three seasons, and I wrote a positive, thank you very much letter. And I think they are happy to run the show, and want to build the viewership. Besides it is awfully classy to have such a positive response to my "can't you move it earlier" (which was more positively phrased, honestly) query as to send a videocasette by return post. I will continue to watch it on KHQA, you can believe me. As it is now time to set up a new tape for FK episodes, I will set it up to tape off KHQA, onto my nifty KHQA-labelled videocasette. Yet another station that says it WANTS to renew the show. Can't anyone hear the stations asking? In frustration, but impressed with my local station... Sara E. You might not i'm not sure about Cousin Tippi, who originally made that comment, but i'd say that's one reason why going against LC wouldn't be so bad. You'd have no doubts what he'd do. Kill, eventually. Nick could go either way, depending on the kind of day he'd had :) So it depends whether you like suspense or would rather just get it over with :) [Name removed by request] (okay, okay. i'm sorry everybody.
