When I was looking up the address and person to contact for the FK local station, I recognized the name of the general manager for KLGT23 as someone who my parents knew and I had seen on TV doing interviews and stuff. So, when I sent the letter, I name dropped in hopes that she would reply. She did, saying that she would forward the letter on and stuff. Then last night, I was at a restaurant with a friend and there was a hefty wait for a table and as we were milling around like cows in the waiting area, I saw her and her husband waiting for a table as well! So I walked right over and introduced myself and started to chat with her regarding my letter and FK and things. It turns out that she was most intrigued by the font that I used to create the letter because it was from the "Handwritten fonts" CD and she jabbed her husband and said "See! I told you it was a font." She also seemed interested in the book I was reading "The Death of Common Sense" and so I think I will send her a copy along with a FK flyer or something... Heh heh heh... Himmanen" <romana@p.......> Subject: The SOS effort My sense is that it's lagging a bit too. What I've been trying to do is get as many people watching each week as I possibly can. I've gotten friends to write letters. I try to write or call my local affiliate every week after I see a new episode. I also wrote a letter to Sam Raimi. I figured it couldn't hurt--Hercules and Xena (a guilty pleasure of mine) are doing great guns in syndication, and Sam's Renaissance Pictures just might be interested in FK for the content and low cost. Susan posted his address yeterday, but here it is again if you missed it: Sam Raimi [Address removed] Raimi is responsible for a lot of things, but is probably best known for "The Evil Dead" movies. He's also behind "American Gothic." I wrote and mentioned FK's low cost and that I thought it would make a great double header with "American Gothic" should that go into syndication (much like Hercules and Xena are a nice double header). Writing to UPN isn't a bad idea either. It really is just a matter of doing what little we can now (write letters, get people to write and publicize the show as much as possible) and wait for the results of the February sweeps. I'm trying not to let myself hope too much because then the disappointment is all the more acute, but I don't think a 2.0 rating in February is out of the question. I think that 1.7 quoted to us by TriStar was the result of people tuning into the prime time airing on USA. Without that, it might drive our numbers up. We can only hope, and wait and see. So I say keep writing--dropping a postcard to your local affiliate every week isn't going to hurt. That and calls will remind them that we're still out here. We can't worry if it annoys them (as someone said the Pittsburg station said)--because we are not Neilson families it is our *only* voice, and they have to realize that. BTW, I think both sides are giving us the runaround--TriStar is saying work on the affiliates, the affiliates say to work on TriStar which means we have to write to both. Of course they're going to tell us not to write letters and that that won't do any good because a) they'd have to admit that writing *does* do some good and that we're having impact and b) they don't want to deal with the extra mail. Also, don't forget the sponsors. If you're worried about writing to USA, TriStar or your affiliate yet again, then write a couple letters to sponsors. I've only had 3 responses to about 25 letters I wrote, but they have been very positive responses. Either my letter was forwarded to TriStar, USA, etc., or forwarded to their marketing department so that they'd get the feedback when they decided what shows to advertise on. Sorry for the ramble, but hang in there. We're going to know one way or the other in a couple weeks I think. In the meantime, writing a few letters every week makes me feel like I'm doing *something*! Sharon -- Sharon Himmanen * romana@p........ Forever Knight has been cancelled. "Hey, all these letters are from the same folks..." Yes, of course it's 'sagging a bit'. After the heady rush of NATPE, we're back to the old, rather dull slog of writing letters, chatting the show up to friends, etc. It's natural. However, I don't really think you have to worry about sending more than one letter to TriStar/USA being perceived as negative, for several reasons. Sandie Currie, the nice woman who was sent out to make us go away <eg> at NATPE, mentioned that all letters to TriStar are opened in the mailroom. And they've been getting a LOT of letters, so I doubt they're doing more than opening them, skimming (maybe) and adding another 'tick' to the count. So, as long as you don't send *identical* letters (which *will* get noticed after a point) and space them out by, say, a week or so, the poor, underpaid, overworked scmucks in the mailroom who have to handle all this will probably never notice. Of course, <tease mode ON> you mailed a letter every day, identical to the one you mailed before (or to the one you had your sister/friend/boss mail the day before), *that* would get noticed. <tease mode OFF> Spread 'em out, make 'em different, and they'll just be added to the count. This also applies to letters you get friends to write, BTW. One of the reasons it's a bad idea to had out 'suggestion letters' as part of this campaign is that, let's face it, humans are lazy. If you give them a text where all they have to do is copy it out and sign their name, most of 'em will do that, rather than bother to come up with something original. And after a while, the people opening them notice that a substantial number of the letters are identical--- and *that's* when they start dismissing them as all coming from a small, fanatic group of people. Oh, the 'opened in the mailroom' scenario *only* applies to letters... so if you want to make sure Jon or Kay *see* your little paen in praise of FK, include it in a *package*-- and it'll make it to their desks! We have it on reliable authority that Jon liked the vampire cookies, so he probably has a sense of humor-- and a small box of candy/cookies/etc wouldn't cost *that* much more to mail. Speaking of packages-- when I went no-mail, some people were talking about a gift-blitz for Kay & Jon. Did anything ever come of that? 'Cause I want to get together a WI package, if so. Just think of the pun potential: UW-Madison mascot Bucky Badger, w/note: "Don't want to Badger you, but we really want a fourth season of FK." Stuffed cow, w/note "Holy Cow! Wonder why? Speaking as a resident of New Orleans, I can explain the allure of the city for a vampire. 1) New Orleans is, of course, the most European city in the States. A vampire could have all of the conviences of living in the States and have all of the scenery of Europe. 2)It is corrupt - from city hall and the police department to the taxi drivers and hot dog venders. You can get away with almost anything here. You don't even need to have a lot of money. Just bribe a police officer with crawfish. 3)Things that are unacceptable in other areas of the country are quite acceptable here. You can walk down the street carrying a beer in a plastic cup or you can examine the pictures ouside of the strip joints on Burbon Street just to make sure you like the girls before you pay the cover to go in. People get away with running around in practically nothing - even some who should be completely covered head to toe. So a man walking the streets wearing black leather and sporting fangs isn't even looked twice at. He's just a part of the scenery. 4) You can slum - ie the French Quarter, or if you happen to be a rather brave vampire, the literal slums - or you could live up the high life uptown in the big fancy/georgeous houses. Both are with in a one mile radius of each other, if that much. 5) Tourists. I know I sound like a travel brochure for the undead, but I wanted to point out that New Orleans isn't the place that Anne Rice makes it out to be. It's a metropolitan city with lots of crime, violence and dirt. Real life occurs here. I have to be very careful every time I go out. I know other cities are the same way, but if you add the other mysterious components of the city - voodoo, ghosts, the tropical climate - it makes for a very heady environment. It's just the place for a vampire. In fact, I think that Uncle would thrive quite nicely around here, though poor Nick, he'd be the only honest cop on the force. I'm stepping off the soapbox now. Great minds think alike...my four legged best friend (of the canine variety), Neesa sent a whole series of very persuasive letters to the whole TriStar and USA group...she never missed an episode, ya know ;)...Alora ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Natpacker & (long distance) SF Bay Area Friends of Forever Knight "Old friend takes on a whole new meaning with you."--Nat ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 1996 15:21:23 -0500 From: Apache <lf@c.......> Subject: Re: Vachon, the lost boy vampire On Fri, 9 Feb 1996, Bonnie Pardoe wrote: > Vachon is described by TPTB in reference to the type of vampires seen in > _The Lost Boys_ movie; mean, delinquent, biker types. Vachon ran a "crew," or vampire gang, for centuries -- we saw Vachon, Screed and Bourbon together in a flashback munching down on a group of barmaids in the 16th century in Tear Asunder. We then saw all three still together, and still killing merrily (Urs said people were talking about a group of men who were killers, afraid of nothing) in Hearts of Darkness, which happened around 1880. There are indications he's softening up (especially in Fever, still under spoiler protection), but basically it's pretty clear Vachon has not been a sweet boy playing pirate -- he's been head pirate of a crew, with the Skull and Crossbones flying proudly. And he hasn't come all that far forward in mending his conscience, either: Urs told him in the present day "I don't take killing as lightly as you do," and remember how wistfully he recalled the old days when you could see a pretty girl in a bar "and just take her?" -- he has a long way to go before he has the conscience of someone like Nicholas de Brabant. Which brings up another interesting question: Does he want to have a conscience (especially one like Nick's)? I mean, honestly speaking, if I were a vampire, I would rather *not* have Nick's conscience. Spending centuries torturing myself because of my nature (something over which I have little or no control) is not my idea of a happy life. If I had to choose, I'd rather be like LC; a conscience is a painful thing to try and live with when you are a killer...Alora <acc0924@i.......> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Natpacker & (long distance) SF Bay Area Friends of Forever Knight "Old friend takes on a whole new meaning with you."--Nat ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 1996 14:58:58 -0600 From: Amy Denton <Z_DENTONAM@t.......> Subject: Ger in 'Airwolf' Hello, Someone posted that the Ger eps. of 'Airwolf' would be starting soon and I just wanted to warn y'all. The eps. Ger was in were *BAD* TV. I don't mean to shout but I was a fan of the original eps and these just made me cringe. At the second Dallas FK party (Black Buddha premiere) we watch an ep. If you would like to see the quotes from that section of the party, check out Peri Smith's web page. (I can't remember the address right now) But some of the funnier ones were: "It's not 'Airwolf', it's 'Gerwolf'!" and "The spirts are angry, the gate is locked." - Line from the show "The spirts obviously use MasterLock!" Don't take this as a missive not to watch it but be forewarned, this is *really, really, really* bad tv. Amy D. z_dentonam@t....... The blood from their cattle is mixed with milk, and it's reserved only for the tribes warriers on special occasions.
