Actually, I haven't even been reading enough forkni-l...Real Life (tm)

I always thought they went *straight for* the carotid and did in
fact swallow the blood as it came spurting out -- suction mouth, as you
call it. I think I've read that it takes about 90 seconds (medical person
please correct) to bleed out from a severed huge artery (carotid or the
brachial? in the thigh). FK vamps have pretty much drained their victims
in about ten seconds, so I figured they were applying tremendous suction
to help the process along. This would make good predator sense-- the
faster you can get the food inside you, the less the chance of being
caught while making the kill.
There's a kind of rumble/growl/purr sound effect that
plays while they're drinking, and I wondered if it was supposed to be
partly the sound of whatever biological mechanism it was that they were
using to drain their victims so quickly.

I was wondering if somebody could help me in this matter. In April I will
be going to the Maritime Science Fiction Festival in Halifax, Nova
Scotia, in April, and I will be doing a "co-hosting" panel on vampires and
Forever Knight. In doing my best to give them the most updated info and
publicity the Friends of Forever Knight have gotten, I was wondering if I could
recieve a copy of the NATPE magazine (if there are ANY extras floating around).
I'll gladly reimburse the person (for the cost of the mag + postage).

This will be the first time I've actually spoken to an audience (other
than our local Science Fiction group - many of whom are FK fans) about
the show. And I'm already nervous. However, as it is a topic I'm familiar
with, I'll probably talk the stripes off a zebra :-)

I've now got three FK t-shirts to show off: one I had done myself
(actually I drew out the FK Logo onto a blank sheet of paper, and a
friend air-brushed it onto a teal t-shirt for me), and the two I bought: the
CERK t-shirt (from Ron, The Enforcer), and the FORKNI-L t-shirt (from Laurie
Salopek).

Enough babbling for now,

I found something *very* interesting whilst researching a history
project...from the Encyclopaedia Brittanica, 15th edition...
"A 10-year old boy named Nicholas...led a second group [of children]. He
preached the Children's Crusade in the Rhineland, attracting an estimated
20,000 children...[after splittting into groups] A few then travelled to Rome,
where Innocent III (Pope from 1198-1216) took pity on them and released them
from their crusade vows...The fate of their leader, Nicholas, is unknown"

And this crusade was in 1212...which would make Nicholas 26 in 1228 if he
survived...
Makes you wonder...

There's an EXCELLENT fantasy book on this called "Crusade in Jeans". It's
a young adult time travel book, but if you're really interested, it'll keep
you interest as an adult. (I just re-read it recently, having found it in

hmmm . . . I've always sort of assumed that vampires go for the neck
*because* the blood would come out fast. I mean, it only takes a few
seconds for a vampire to drain a human to death, and it seems like a
vampire would be vulnerable while feeding, and thus would have to do it
quickly. Doesn't it take a huge loss of blood to kill someone? And yet
 .
. . we don't see FK vampires draining several *bottles* of blood at once .
. . and Screed's rats don't contain a lot of blood, and we normally don't
see piles and piles of chomped rats lying about . . . but still, if it
isn't blood loss that kills human victims, what does? Maybe some more
questions to add to the "carotid" question are: how much blood does a
vampire take with each kill? how fast does a vampire take in blood? how
much blood does a vampire need each day for survival?

Ooh! Katya, I like this question!
Can one assume that since pathogens (with perhaps a few possible
exceptions) die off in a vampire body -- that is, very few "foreign"
organisms, bacteria or virus, are permitted to live in a vampire -- can
one assume that the answer is no, since plaque causes cavities, and
plaque is caused by bacteria?
That's what I think, anyway, unless anyone can come up with a better
response off the top of his/her head.

Subject: Re: Bloooooood and biting

Laura makes some good points about the vampires maybe going *straight
for* the carotid. We've seen many a victim on FK be killed in a very
short period of time. How much blood does someone need to lose before
dying (or going into unconsciousness)?

Laura's comments raised another question in me: When an FK vampire
is "sipping" from someone, is he/she *not* drinking from the carotid?

One of the things I mentioned to Lisa in our private discussion about
this subject was I wondered if vampires had some way to seal up wounds
made after biting someone (at least enough to keep blood from spurting
out if there is blood left in the body). Seems to me that that would
have had to be done to Amalia in the Crazy Love flashback since Nick
sipped on her more than once before killing her. Either that or he
wasn't taking blood from a vein or artery when sipping. Don't vampire
bats have the ability to seal wounds (or just desenitize them?)?

I always thought the "growling" sound though was just that--a sound.
We hear it in other cases besides biting.

Sorry, no snips from original article (I'm on digest) but

you mentioned the discrepancy between Nick's claim that he hasn't killed
in 100 years (est) while we know that he killed at least 2 people in WWII
(France) ... one explanation proposed was that he hadn't killed for
food/bloodlust. One of the victims was a supposed French traitor (male)
who betrayed his Maquis cell to the Nazis. The second (female) was coming
out of Nazi headquarters and, according to Lacroix, was sleeping with
the enemy and had been the real traitor. Nick's killing them was in the
way of executions.

It's a moot point.

On the other hand ... the writers don't seem to have a show bible to this
day.

Fun facts about vampire bats.

     1. Vampire bats have fewer teeth than any other bat because they do not
have to chew their food. (so no need to floss!)
     2. Along with flying, vampire bats can run, jump, and hop with great
speed, using their chest muscles to fling themselves skyward. (which is why
we don't see Nick's chest up close and personal perhaps?)
     3. Vampire bats in the same colony support their roostmates by
regurgitating blood to bats that are unable to find food. (the ole wrist cut.)
     4. Vampire bats don't suck blood. They make a small incision and lap up
the blood of their hosts. (well, Nick has to be different somehow, right?)

Scientists recently discovered that the anticoagulant in vampire bat
saliva is twenty times stronger than any other known anti-clotting agent.

See http://www.tp4.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/~lr/bats/bats.html for other bat things.

Didn't Nick kill a hole lot of German Police when he was trying
to find a book that supposedly contain a cure? wasn't this after the
war, I think it was because he help a women and she found out he was a
vampire(shown during a flashback) then it goes to the present time and he
gets a call from the same women telling him thanks and he still in
thier(her family also knows of him being a vampire) prayers to find a cure.

Something about cats' teeth is that they have nerve endings down to the tips
of their fangs. That way they can *feel* exactly where to slide their fangs
between the little mousie's cervical vertibrae.

Hmmm. Perhaps this adds another dimension to vampiric errogenous zones.
Plus they could feel exactly where they were putting their teeth.

LaCroix isn't the only one. Check out the scene in Dark Knight when Nick
is drinking from the jade cup.

I think this should be added to the drinking game:

Vampire drinks blood (from cup or victum) and it dribbles over the side of
the mouth, necessitating the use of a finger to wipe it up--2 drinks

Another vampire does the wiping--4 drinks.

"Yes, I want to be a victim, I'm pissed at Nick!"

"Serious tonsil hockey!!!"

"Who wants Nick Knight and Adrian Paul together?"
  "Me, me, me!"

"My, that was a convienant garden hose." (Guess what ep. that came from)

"Opps!! She fall down and go boom!"

"I feel the need....the need for Screed!"

"Was it good for you?"

"Oh, yeah....I'll take this one daddy!"

"If he bites her, he'll let all the air out."

"Nick looks like undeath on toast."

"Nicks the brains of *that* group."

"Somehow, I don't think 'opps' is going to cover this."

And from the Ger AOL Chat:

"What is the worst prank ever played on the show?"
   - "Tracy!" (Sorry, Partly, not a Perkalator in the group. :) )
   - "Water guns!" (This came from someone who had been on the set, don't ask
me to explain, cause I don't know.)

"What does TX stand for?" (This came from a Texan mind you !)

"I'll miss Baldy the Rat Sucker." (This came from Ger)

"Go Jamie!" (After a particulary good question asked by The Illustrated Cousin)

"Nice to touch a cord."
-"He could touch *my* cord!"

THE END!!!

That's all folks, enjoy!!

When the thread on reducing the fang threat began, the first thought that
came to my mind was to put a cage on Nick's head like they used on Hannibal
Lechter in _Silence of the Lambs_. If he were also handcuffed to prevent
him from breaking any necks, than his human lover would probably survive
the episode (provided she didn't die laughing).

All right then, here's a posit. Is it possible that he would have
grown the hand back eventually, over much more time than he would have
healed the scratches, bruises, and lacerations, but that re-attaching the
hand would have required a lot less time to heal? Just a thought.
Thanks for your time and bandwidth.
