I'll post our current dollar level tomorrow when I get another free minute :P If anyone would like to take Nick Gray up on this suggestion and get involved in the group drive, please make your checks payable to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation and send them to me at: Lisa Prince [Address removed] Earlier information given still applies. We're asking for $5.00 donations from anyone who's interested in giving. You can give more if you choose to do so, but please don't feel pressured to do so. On an added note, to any new list members (or skeptics), we've already given the Pediatric AIDS Foundation $5,806.50, which several list members delivered in-person on January 17th. They are very much aware of what we are doing and are delighted. If anyone needs any type of confirmation of the authenticity of this endeavor, please contact me and I will be happy to provide such. But Vachon had to go & get the hand to re-attach it--it *didn't* grow back. I'd say that a vamp who had his fang-teeth yanked out could re-attach them, but that they wouldn't spontaneously grow back. Teeth are not simple structures, they are pretty complicated--I doubt that they are as complicated a structure as a hand (?), but they're not just little blocks of carbon or something! BTW, my daddy had his tooth knocked out, root and all, by a swinging crane once (and we're not talking a bird here)--he had the presence of mind to put his tooth in his handkerchief and wet it with some cool, clean water from a waterfountain. About an hour later his dentist had put it back into his jaw. He still has that tooth! (The accident was back in 1964!) So I'd think this would work just as well for a vampire. Vachon was on his way out of town, and the last thing he'd want to do was lay around the house waiting for his hand to grow back, hence his rummaging through the makeshift morgue for the missing part. If that were possible, Vachon would have just regrown a new hand instead of having to go back to find his hand. The idea of a fangless vampire does create a strange image though. :) Although I can't see that it would make much difference. Nick still has plenty of other teeth to bite with if he wanted to. You'd have to extract all his teeth. And then he'd probably just take to ripping out someone's throat with his nails or a knife or something if he really fell off the wagon and wanted to attack someone for their blood. Which makes me wonder, did Vachon get his own hand or someone else's? I'm leaning towards this not growing back, but that a suitable replacement could be used. But with the special function that the fangs have,if the nerve and all was removed then how would they grow? This of course would make me wonder what if you were brought across and you had already either had your fangs removed or you had them root canaled would your teeth react? Now please don't get me wrong -- I'm as capable of fantasizing as anyone else -- but I too have been bothered by this tendency lately. It's probably at least in part because we have at least one lurking cast member and known conduits to some of the others, but we've always made a point of not saying anything that you wouldn't want to be saying and turn around to find that the cast member in question was standing behind you. Yes, that has happened at cons. Much of what used to be on Forkni-l now ends up on Fkspoilr, because it relates to new episodes. However we have shown a tendency to get into general topics over there. I suggest we try harder to move discussions which have become general to Forkni-l. Some topics have become worn out for longer term members, e.g. why Fk vampires react to crosses, but that doesn't mean that the topics can't be talked about. Come on, some of you lurkers, talk to us. Your opinions count as much as the rest of us! Another thing we used to talk about is, what would happen if situations. E.g. would Nick really like being mortal if he had a chance at it? A number of people have pointed out (some in terse terms) that Nick needs to find redemption, not give up his vampiric nature; that if he accepted his role as a vampire he would finally be happy. I agree that redemption is his ultimate goal. However, there is no way for him (at present) to reach that goal without turning his back on vampirism. Consider, if Nick gave into his desire to kill, he would KNOW that he was doing wrong. How would he find redemption while killing people he knew to be more than mere animals? LaCroix sees people as a supply of food and amusement, and thus feels no remorse for killing them. He doesn't need redemption because he doesn't feel that he is doing anything wrong. Nick, however, sees people as PEOPLE. If he gave into his desire to kill them, he would be doing an evil act and pushing himself further and further from redemption. Turning from his vampiric nature is a necessary step to achieving redemption, either by becoming human or finding a way to supress the violent urges that are part and parcel of being a vampire. Only when Nick stops giving into his vampire side can he begin to forgive himself and become redeemed, because he feels that what his vampire nature forces him to do is wrong. The only way giving into his vampire side would make him happy is if he gave up his concience at the same time. Why would we assume that they don't digest the blood in the same way that we humans digest food? I break down my milk shake into solids and fluids (water) and I sweat the water part. Vampires may be at least partially spiritually created (at least in FK), but they clearly exist by *some* physical laws. I'd have to say that if vampires weren't mostly water, too, they'd be powdery and have flaky skin. Unless you're thinking that some supernatural force is holding their cells together instead of a hydrogen bond (what holds water molecules together to create surface tension, unless I am forgetting my chemistry). If they don't digest blood, then where the heck does the blood GO? I'm not willing to accept that it just disappears: Matter is neither created nor destroyed, it is only transformed. And not to get gross or anything, but if humans subsisted on blood, we would still cry regular saline tears. >Like Nat said in Fever (talking aobut Screed in the final stages >"bleeding out"), she said the lungs and abdomin fill with fluid "in this >case blood." So fanfic assumption is not out of sinc with the FK universe. Well, people's lungs and other body parts fill with blood, also. People can hemhorrage. You know like with Ebola? Our organs liquify -- and that liquid is blood! Sorry but I like at least some scientific validity since I am not a subscriber to the religious explanation! :) Vicki Merriman wrote: >Vamps, OTOH, are dead. NK grows those sideburns and all. As a kid who used to cut the hair off her Barbie dolls, I can tell ya a dead head don't grow hair! ;) Wicked Cousin Tippi ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Feb 1996 21:30:43 -0500 From: Tippi Blevins <TippiNB@a.......> Subject: Religion, Knights, and Vampires oh my! As far as whether or not religious people would be on this list... Who knows? I'm spiritual, not religious -- there's a big difference, at least to me. ;) But I've always said that you have to first be religious to be sacrilegious, and spiritual to appreciate good wickedness. ;) If Nick was a good church-going knight (as he probably was), then it's not a surprise to me that the pendulum swung the other way. What's the saying? "How the mighty shall fall"? or something? Only saints can fall from grace, because devils have already hit rock bottom. As far his his age... Well, he could be younger than he looks. The life expectancy back in the Middle Ages was not so high. Someone could be old by the time they were 40! A hard life could have made a 25 or 30 year old look ten years older. After all, there were no facial moisturizers back then. ;) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Feb 1996 20:19:12 -0800 From: Bonnie Pardoe <bonnie@o.......> Subject: Human vs. Cow Blood A friend of mine, who is a vet student, sent me the following, for those of you curious: >Now about this Cow vs. Human thing: I'm not really qualified to >answer the question with any specifics because we don't get much stuff >on humans or other primates. Based on the healing that vampires seem to get from coming over, I'd say that they got those healed too. After all, cavities start because a little bacteria who likes to colonize mouths also secretes acid. It would be like a scar. Now if they can keep scars from their former life (like the Rick Springfield Nick Knight) then, they'd keep the cavities they had, but wouldn't get more. Blood, I think, doesn't :contain a large amount of sugar... And would their natural healing process :stop the decay if they did develop one? I'd think so. I don't know about that. If they could get cavities, I think that blood would be pretty good at it. Normally blood has a glucose level of between 70 and 100 mg per 100cc volume. Diabetics can go from 300 to over 1000 on an out of control day. I wonder if diabetics would taste better to a vampire? kat Kat ( June Russell ) pacifier.com!grendal!kat kat@g....... Heu!
