Ye Gods, I fear this feud will escalate if not stopped soon, and then we'll
*all* find ourselves at each other's throats (pardon the pun) and the next
thing you know, War VII starts before War VI is over, and where does *that*
leave us? And while I'm itching to get my...umm...teeth around some of the
other factions and truly *earn* my status as Cousin, I do think it would
defeat our mutual purpose right here and now.

So, may I please ask that the two sparring partners sign a non-agression pact
until we finally know one way or the other, the fate of FK?

(If, not, please don't come looking for me... I'm going to go hide in the
catacombs under the Paris Opera House... I don't think you'd find me if you
came looking <smiling weakly, hoping his diversion tactic is working>)

How about a story where LC and Vachon help each other out? Yes, I think that
would help... I'll start work on it immediately...

Inside your mind, as always,

Okaaaay, now I gotta try to remember exactly what I said, 'cause I didn't
keep a copy of the post for reference...

First of all, I certainly HOPE that I made it clear that my post was
completely and totally a personal opinion, and not in any way reflective of
list policy!!! Off-topic and libelous stuff is one thing, but there is NO
"Political Correctness rule" on this list. And I wouldn't venture to
define PC, in any case. I did not mean to suggest that religious
discussion was forbidden (as long as it's in context with FK, otherwise
it's off-topic and Must Not Happen) -- and if I *had* been suggesting it,
well, it's a rule that I would have been breaking within the very same
post...

I kind of take it as a given that there's a huge difference between a
religious *discussion* and a religious *argument*. We've had some great
religious discussions; that wasn't at all what I was talking about. And
the fact that those discussions do NOT degenerate into arguments is a
measure of the maturity of the listmembers, imo. What I meant to say (and
apparently failed to say) is that we have religious discussions WITHOUT
flaming each other -- and that my remarks were meant in the same way,
rather than to offend; and if my mind sans-coffee and wholly-stressed-out
failed to phrase that properly

I also have a personal tendency to get irritable at the suggestion that
"the judeo/christian tradition" is somehow canon for the universe as a
whole. (There's no proof, dammit! Show me pictures! Show me slides!)
But then, I have a tendency to get irritable at the suggestion that the
things we see on television are natural law for the FK universe. (They
don't do continuity. Why should I do 'series canon'?) So I guess these
things are relative; but if I was excessively snappish, I apologize. Just
my own .02 on the j/c tradition as it relates or doesn't relate to the FK
universe as a whole (yes, this IS an on-topic post! <g>) -- because I'm of
the opinion that the standard myths of the vampire don't apply at all in
that universe, that it's all science (albeit "of a type sufficiently
advanced" to mimic magic at times).

However: I counter that even on a practical, "food-chain" level, the idea
that FK vampires are somehow "naturally" unacceptable bothers me greatly,
as much as it would if any ethnic or social group were designated the same
way. I concede that I would not want to be locked into a closed space with
a hungry LaCroix and a cow; I know very well that the cow would outlive me
by quite a spell. However, for every rule there is an exception; and the
exception to THAT rule is the one that states that all generalizations are
dangerous (bonus points to anyone who can actually decipher this sentence).
As I said, it's always easy for the prey to rationalize that their
predator is somehow 'evil'; the challenge is to understand the objective
situation, the motivation.

And yeah, I would say the same thing if I were confronted with a real
(un)live vampire. I'd be too fascinated and thrilled at the sheer
unreality of it all to be too scared. Course, I'd probably get myself
killed, but that's beside the point. It's the challenge, y'see.

Besides, the predators don't *always* win.

I was confused at first that the photo I first downloaded from your page
only had 6 people in it. Egads, the NATPE 7 can't count! Then I realized
that *someone* had to take the picture. Between the two photos in there
you seem to have seven separate individuals. We need captions, though.
Who's the person in the first picture in the lower right who seems to be
half vamped-out? Or is that just red-eye from the flash? ;)

Also, Diane, you need to be more ambitious. The web counter on your page
has only two digits! Come on, have the kind of confidence that Jamie had
when she started the Save FK page -- 8 digits! The Save FK page will have
to get to 100 million hits before that sucker will roll over!

P.S. My local bookstore finally got the January 22nd issue of "Electronic
Media." I bought two copies just in case someone else wants a complete
copy of the issue with the "Friends of FK" ad in it and can't find the
magazine in their own area. Let me know if anyone wants it for $2.50 plus
postage. (I've got to stop offering stuff on this list; I'm getting
swamped lately! ;)

By the way, does anyone know if the January 24th issue -- the one with
the article on the Save FK campaign in it -- will be distributed anywhere
except at NATPE? I know it was a special issue and don't want to haunt
the newstands again if there's no point.

Subject: Re: Natalie's Quandry

I've been following the Nick/Natalie thread and something Allison Percy said
in defense of Nick triggered the following thoughts.

Has anyone compared Nick's plight with alcoholism? Yes, I know this was
probably done after Feeding the Beast but I wasn't on the list then. Nick's
been a vampire for almost 800 years and only has been making a real conscious
effort with this much change since meeting Natalie approx 4 years ago (this
time is debatable depending on how you want to measure show time or actual
time).

But 4 yrs vs 800 yrs. That's a short time to overcome such ingrained habits.

No matter how much Nick wants to change it's going to take a lot longer.
I've been immersed in learning all about alcoholism since a close relative
has been battling it and I have a whole new perspective on how hard it is to
recover. I learned it takes as long to *completely* recover as it took to
fall all the way down. Which averages about 15 yrs for mortals. (7-8 yrs
down, 7-8 yrs back up). Now Nick has really only been on the road to
recovery for 100 yrs (not counting relapses which *will* happen) and was a
active vampire for over 600 yrs, so he has a long way to go. He's gotten
impatient because, let's face it, it would be hard for anyone to forge ahead
for 100 yrs and not have a lot to show for it. (in his opinion).

Depression and self-image play a big role too, and Nick has a major problem
in those areas. Depression does a good job in masking alot of other
problems. Also, Schanke's death (actually I'm holding out that he's an
immortal and cut ties to this life after he died and came back to life)
could have affected Nick much more than he is letting on and could be
contributing to the major backsliding that has been occuring this past
season.

The problem is that the chances that Nick will *recover* in Natalie's
lifetime are pretty slim. So, Nat has to decide if she wants to continue to
help Nick on his hopefully upward journey. It's real hard to stand by and
watch someone go thru this when all you can offer is emotional support.
Especially when many times they shun anything you have to offer. I know I
felt like packing it in a several times.

Now, I'm a major Nick and Nat fan, so I'm rooting for him to succeed and for
her to stick by him. And in the meantime, there's always fiction!

Come on now. He's taken her out of her apartment at least twice this season:
to the cemetery. He's also taken her home from work (and would have picked
her up from the clinic after her surgery if he hadn't had to save her) in
LNMTA. In a couple of other episode tags it looks (to me) as if they had
come home from a night on the town to sit by the fire and talk. It seems to
me like everyone thinks that the only time they spend together is the time
we actually see them on screen. I think that their onscreen-time implies
that they spend a lot of time together that we *dont'* see. I'd rather
assume that, however, than actually have to see "Bowling with Nick and Nat".

In response to [Name removed by request]'s comments, I meant by the woman might
be forever pregnant that the fetus would stay alive but would just never
get any older if whatever causes the vampirism was passed on through
the mother's blood. As for [Name removed by request]'s question about the fetus
not being foreign material and possibly wouldn't be aborted, genetically the
fetus would have to have some characteristics of its father and that
might be difference enough for the vampire element to consider the
fetus foreign material.

Elizabeth was in the flashback of I Will Repay, I think. She had
leprosy that was healed when Nick brought her over. I'd say that that
indicates that the vampire element makes the vampire body at its top
physical form (so I'd think acne would disappear). That doesn't
maybe mean that any previous to being brought over scars would be
necessarily healed though. Although, come to think of it, Elizabeth
didn't have scars after she was brought over. But then again her
scars came from a disease rather than an injury.

FK vampirism does tend to make one's appearance stay frozen in

Screed preferred animal blood and survived on it all right. Perhaps
it just has to do with what you drink first. If you're brought over
by a vampire that prefers human blood, that master is probably going
to introduce you to drinking human blood. Now Nick did give Richard
cow blood when he woke as I recall and Richard when he went out then
fed on humans, so it may be that there is a lure in "live" prey that
is very attractive to vampires. Perhaps there are hormones (or maybe
adrenalin) released in the fear or pleasure of live prey that the
vampire finds an enjoyable "kick".

I've done fanfic where I postulated that there are certain hormones
in human blood that vampires need to be healthy vampires.

James Parriott has said that vampire/mortal sex isn't possible because
it involves penetration both above and below the neck (right, Lisa?).
However, in the flashback of Dance By the Light of the Moon Janette
seduces a mortal Nick without biting him. It's possible that JP was
speaking more about male vampires judging by the comment. Nick has
been shown getting the urge to bite in romantic situations before even
getting to the deed itself. Anyway, it *is* supposed to happen. I
would suppose it's a basic natural instinct brought on by sexual
desires and/or emotions that act to weaken the vampire's control over
himself or herself (although a female vampire may be able to "fake"
deep involvement in the act and be able to have more control over the
urge to bite). Romantic/sexual encounters between vampires seem to
routinely involve biting.

Subject: Re: mortal sex

It occurs to me that another factor that might lead to biting is that
in a romantic/sexual situation, the vampire's heightened senses get
turned on more by the activity. Thus the sight, smell (perhaps of
blood), touch (mortal heat), hearing (of heartbeat), awaken the
taste sensations and desires to taste blood. Vampire hunger has been
shown to include smelling blood in someone's veins and the listening
of the heartbeat of the mortal, and vampire hunting often includes
listening for heartbeats too. If the heightened senses used in
hunting/feeding come into play during sex, it's not hard to see that
as a posssible enticement into the desire to bite.

BTW, on another list someone posted that a survey of what "smells"
men found desirable listed the winning smell as cinnamon rolls.
Proof of the adage that "a way to a man's heart is through his
stomach"? ;) A link between sex and food for human males too? :)
Maybe for the vampire the desirable smell becomes blood.

(kind of has echoes of vampirism, too):

The female angler fish has this fleshy lightbulb growing out of her forehead,
which she uses to attract a mate. The male, much smaller than her, hooks up
and does his fertilizing thing. After that, the two stay linked until the
female totally absorbs him into her body and she eventually becomes male
herself. Cool, huh!

Think of the FK equivalent: Nat and Nick finally hook up and do the deed.
Afterward, Nick mysteriously disappears and Nat starts wearing her hair
short and blond...

Diane..then conceivably,if the male were to show self-control or tactical
timing, (also trying to stay PG-13) then do you think that he would be able to
maintain a relationship with a mortal? I have always felt yes,to this,but
only if the vamp were strong willed enough to do so. An example would be a
scene from "ER" last week when "Noah" was telling his female companion what
he thought about so that his mind would be distracted to insure her pleasure
shall we say. Couldn't the male vamp do the same or is he actually just
"giving in" to the urge instead of being less selfish. So if he truly loved
someone couldn't he resist? Or with males is the urge undeniable? I don't
like to think of it this way because it seems to reduce the males (vamps) at
least to being mere animals who can't control their primal urges. What do
you think?

Hi, all. I'm delurking here for a moment to ask a question. Does anyone in
the Roanoke, VA viewing area (if there is anyone besides me in this area)
know when FK is shown on WDBJ-7 (the local CBS affiliate) know when it's on?
I'm about to write to the station, but I can hardly say I watch it on their
station if I don't know when it's on (I tape the show and watch it from the
USA broadcast). Also, I'd like to have a syndication backup in case USA
drops the show (and I'm kind of ignoring any hard evidence that they've
already dropped it until it's gone for good. I figure with their lowsy
lineup of new shows, plus relying on Silk Stalkings with an all new cast to
have the ratings of the original, USA is in for a rude awakening sooner or
later.) Please contact me by private email at carmas@v........

On another topic: You know you've been watching and reading too much
forever knight when you have a dream in which Nick, your oh-so-practical
friend Megan, her four non-existent brothers, and yourself all spend your
Saturday night battling to keep LaCroix and his children from bringing over
the entire United States Summer Olympic Team. Guess you had to be there. :)

Why do vampires prefer human blood? I've just always assumed that it tasted
better. It has a "rich, full-bodied taste" and a certain bouquet. <g>

There's probably a psychological reason, too. Vampires consider themselves at
the very top of the food chain, with humans one rung down. By drinking human
blood, they're able to further convince themselves that they're superior and
that humans are, well, cattle. Being able to maintain this emotional distance
from humans makes it easier for vampires to kill them. After all, we (or most
of us at least) don't agonize over the deaths of the animals that make up our
Big Macs. (Notice that I didn't say "cattle" here -- who knows what animals
go into a Big Mac?! <g>)

Huh? I am a religious person (albeit a very middle-of-the-road one) but I
see nothing wrong with vampires or discussion about them.

I *like* the idea of vampires, but then I don't think vampires are evil,
despite what Nick believes (I may be a Knightie, but this doesn't mean I
have to believe everything Nick does). I think vampires are just different.
There is something that makes them so, but I don't particularly care what.
It's watching them interact with each other and humans (and watching Nick
struggle to become something other than what he is) that fascinates me.

I like anti-heroes because I think that your average, clean-cut
Superman-type hero is just too good to be true. I find it much more
believable when someone with flaws (and boy does Nick have a lot of flaws!)
goes out and tries to do the 'right thing'. He may keep stumbling and
backsliding, but he tries. Okay, maybe sometime he doesn't try hard enough,
but his heart is in the right place. I have always liked how Christopher
Reeve defined a hero, and I think it definitely applies to Nick: "A hero is
someone who, despite weakness, doubt or not always knowing the answers, goes
ahead and overcomes anyway."

Wasn't there an episode where LaCroix asks Nick to kill a barber who turned
out to be Jack the Ripper? Was LaCroix saying he was Poisoned! by the blood
of the barber when he put the bite on him? I think there is a very psychic
connection (as well as biologic) to the blood of a human. Why waste time
defining a bottle of blood as 'earthy, robust, but finished well' if somehow
the character of the psychie of the human who shed the blood wasn't
represented in the blood?

As always, consider the source.

Okay, okay, alright, Iknow two posts in row....sorry.

Wasn't there a flashback series about Nick putting the bite on a mortal lover
several times before he actually killed her? (EP anyone?) She wnated him to
do it as I recall, and he was trying to discourage the final 'climax' as it
were (albeit very weakly). My impression was that this was sex for vampires
with mortals. They have sex, drink alittle blood, but the true thrill was the
kill, a very sensual thing. Poor Nick, all hormones and everything just
couldn't control himself. I seem to remember that in present day the
flashbacks created a need to imbibe sexually that Janette seemed very happy
to fill for him.

Again, consider the source.

Screed said in "Fever" that the first type of blood you ingest after being
brought across was what you craved forever after. That's why he always drank
from rats.
I would think that's why most vamps crave human blood, because that's what
they have for their first meal.

Nah. Sick is when you start saying things like, "Doesn't Nick have fabulous
nose hairs?" I agree that the hands are nice. The arms are also
particularly well-formed, and he uses his hands and arms with remarkable
grace for a man. I could list several examples, but a couple might be

Overall, GWD is about as nice a package as you could put together. But can
you imagine TPTB choosing someone like--oh, say Marty Feldman (RIP) to play
their romantic vampire hero? Nope. I expect looking rather nice regardless
of what part of oneself was exposed was in the job description. Fortunately
for our eyes, they chose wisely (spoken with the inflection of the ancient
Knight in _Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade_). Plus, GWD is one awesome
actor.

Ah, but would she have died? Was she merely uncomfortable? And
knowing vampire strength, would she have died from a lack of oxygen or a
lack of blood to the brain (i.e., her arteries would have been cut off),
presumably the reason that vampires die when their heads are removed?

Perhaps they (TPTB at FT13) wrote the part with NB in mind. It could have
been a kind of backward attempt at tying NB's role on FT13 with his role on FK.
I noticed a similar thing with GWD's Highlander ep. For at least
half the ep, he is moaning about his lost love, named Janette. Coincidence???
I think not!!!

Just a quick thought or two: I think we like anti-heroes because
in fiction we get to control the extent of their wickedness. In fiction,
they are Byron's Corsair with a a thousand crimes and one good deed, and
we get to focus on the one good deed. In real life, even if they are
beautiful and deadly -- "mad, bad, and dangerous to know" -- they are
well out of control and likely to be as destructive of other people as
Byron himself was. And as unlikely to suffer any remorse at all as he
was.

Bionic people and vampires in FK have in common that they must be
created by others who were originally human (so they are exotic subsets of
human existence), and that in that creation some weakness is left in. The
heel by which they held and dipped, so to speak. It seems to me to be a
similar impulse to the anti-hero one: in fiction, we can have our deadly
peril calibrated so that we can love it, even indulge our own fantasies of
being powerful and compelling. In acquiring that strength -- new bionic
parts or a new life as a vampire -- we do not acquire strength out of all
recognition. Instead, it is if not a crippled strength, a vulnerable one,
and we can easily project our own vulnerability into this new context.

For me this translates into a powerful imaginative attraction to
Vachon the active vampire and LaCroix the master vampire that is tied to
a powerful sense that the FK character I'd most like to be in real life
is Schanke -- a happy, effective, flawed person whose universe centers on
a really solid family. (Unfortunately, I'm more like Nat, but let's
definitely not get into that.)

2.Overseas--Europe/Africa type dealy-- I have avccess to a satellite that

nand I wanted to know if any foreign folks new how/when FK was shown via

except maybe Hebrew because I don't know anyone who speaks Hebrew...Thanks!

3.Overseas--Egypt- what kind of stuff could/shoul I send to TriStar or KK
from here? Would it be appropriate since they don't show FK here and I'm
obviously not watching the show as we speak? (They have Might Morphin
Power Rangers here in Arabic... at like 7PM.. what a timeslot!!) Would it
be counterproductive to send them something? How about sending something
to KCBS, my local affiliate, saying... I'm not watching it, but I'm sure as

Um, guys, this is the Forever Knight list. In other words, no reposting
unrelated messages, no matter how compelling an issue you think it might
be; no advertisements for free software (unless it's directly FK-related);
et cetera.

If you've got something you want to say, cut it down to one line and put it
in your sig, and ask people to e-mail you for information. Anything more
than that is a major no-no.

Debates on body parts, no matter how silly some might deem them, are still
on-topic, as long as it's an FK-character's body part you're discussing.
And threads around here have a way of veering off-topic and coming back...
but some of the other posts I've seen here lately, though, are decidedly
NOT on-topic, nor even make an effort to be. C'mon, guys... I don't *like*

So let's nip this in the bud before it becomes a trend, eh? Stay on topic,
