I don't know why she would think that this was odd, but she asked me why I had a can of SPAM up there. Naturally, I burst into hysterical laughter, and when I finally calmed down, I explained the whole thing to her. (I had told her about it before, but not in great detail, considering the looks she was giving me. Now, however, I was armed with that wonderful post about the effects we had at NATPE and on the industry, and I think she was actually impressed this time.) A few minutes later, she said, "You know, you can polish your furniture with SPAM." As I burst into hysterical laughter again she said, "No, really, I saw this on the Today show or something like that. It was a show on different uses for regular household items. The stuff is so oily you can polish your furniture with it." I thanked her profusely for this newfound knowledge and promised to share it with my fellow listmembers so that they, too, could have SPAM furniture. I found it particularly disturbing the other day when I was reading the X-Files list and someone was going on about the character of "Scully" and yes they specifically said "Scully",not Gillian Anderson and how they were surprised to see "Scully" smoking in an episode and then finished this by saying that they were sure that she had quit before or while she was pregnant! Well its kind of like the age old art of flirting, and I'm sure you all know about that! We have their attention, so now its time to reel them in! We have to keep their eyes and minds focused on FK! "Cause we all know...if you don't keep 'em interested, their minds will wander elsewhere! So, heres the deal, we are launching.... THE "BRING SOMEONE ACROSS" CONTEST! The prizes will be small, but as we all know, the true prize is one that we can all win, a fourth season of Forever Knight. The object of course is to "bring across" new viewers to FK AND to have them write letters to TriStar,USA and their affiliate telling them that they are a new viewer and who they were brought across by. You might want to have a "Coming Across" Party. Invite friends over who haven't seen FK and have some stationary all set up for them. Since you are all experienced letter writers by now,you shouldn't have any problem helping them put pen to paper. Remember to include all the important information, name, address, occupation etc and what station you watched it on. You as the host,if you are in an area where FK is shown at the wee hours of the morning, write your syndie, let them know that you "brought across" these fans, but that you would be able to bring over more if the time slot was better. When you have a party planned, send a note off to TriStar,USA and your syndie pledging X amount of new viewers, then try to double that pledge! When you have your viewers together, send me a note, telling me how many and who it was that you "brought across" There is more than one prize and we are working on more..so obviously the people who "bring across" the most will be the winners! And we'll all be winners in the long run! Send you note to me at: PO Box 000, Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx, XX 00000 Susan G and I will be taking care of the prizes and luckily we live in the same area. We saw in Blackwing how Nick was turned by a cerimonial raven knife; it burned his hand when he touched it. Nick is far from Native American, so I think it is the faith of the one who consecrated it. In that light, anything with religious signifigance to a person with great faith will turn a vampire. There are some religions where a weapon of some sort is imbued with holiness... These would turn a vampire as well, regardless of what religion the vampire was (or if they were religious at all) Also... "Urs" is short for "Ursula," I'm pretty sure. Brabant is partly French-speaking -- the other language is Flemish -- but it was *not* a part of France in Nick's day and is now divided between the Netherlands and Belgium. In Nick's lifetime it was an independent sovereign duchy. Being a native speaker of French because he comes from a country where it is one of the languages no more makes Nick a Frenchman than being an English speaker from the United States makes me English. The area that was Brabant in Nick's time (ca. 1200-1228) is now in Belgium, so if you want to give him a nationality in modern terms, Nick's a Belgian. Btw, we can't be certain that LaCroix is an Italian in modern terms. Yes, he was a Roman general, but that doesn't mean he was born in what is now Italy. As was pointed out in the discussion of A More Permanent Hell when some people wondered if a Roman general could look like Nigel Bennett, he could easily have been a native of Gaul. By the time of Pompeii, Gaul had been a Roman province, complete with Romanized local population and upper class, for several hundred years. There are historical examples of generals and other important figures in LaCroix's lifetime who were Gauls or Iberians -- in modern terms, Frenchmen and Spaniards. Given LaCroix's propensity for hanging around France and his apparent assumption of a French identity in the Middle Ages, I'd guess that he was of Gaulish birth. Thanks to all who entered the tape giveaway contest! (In case you missed the original post, I offered to give away a tape with first-generation SP copies of "Night in Question" and "Fever" to the person who sent me the most creative response.) Sorry this has taken longer than expected, but I had some trouble finding a temporary replacement for my computer monitor. The dinosaur-like VGA monitor I grafted onto my computer seems to be working for now. I got some fun responses, including a little tale about missing "Night in Question" on TV due to an encounter with Nick and LaCroix, as well as a response from someone who has used small children to get their entire extended family to write letters to TPTB, but the following entry has been declared the winner of the tape: ******** > From: TippiNB@a....... > Date: Fri, 26 Jan 1996 22:35:55 -0500 > To: percy91@w....... > Subject: Re: Tape giveaway contest > > Ok, how's about.... > > (Cue LaCroix voice-over) > > "She was brought across in 1972... Honest! :) > > Have a blast! > Tippi > ******** Well, Tippi, you're going to have trouble sculpting Janette since she isn't in either of the episodes on this tape, but you will be able to sculpt Nick's bellybutton in great detail. Or is that a stunt bellybutton? Enquiring minds want to know! Consolation prizes can be arranged for those who entered but did not win -- e-mail me off-list and I'll see what I can do! I was shocked to learn that there were people out there who missed "NiQ"!! Although I think "Night in Question" requires a fair amount of background information to enjoy, I agree that "Fever" and "Dead of Night" would be good episodes to send to media types who need to be brought across. Has anyone explored the legality of doing this? Would that constitute "commercial use"? * Allison Percy, a perky Knightie percy91@w....... * * __o Pedal for Forever Knight & for a worthy charity! * * _`\<,_ Contact me to pledge support or join the ride.
