No sooner did I post my last message about getting digests I missed, than
in the same flashsession in comes Laurie's reply to a previous message of

Subject: Uses for SPAM

My mother came over yesterday, and happened to notice the can of SPAM that is
still sitting on top of my computer. I don't know why she would think that this
was odd, but she asked me why I had a can of SPAM up there. Naturally, I burst
into hysterical laughter, and when I finally calmed down, I explained the whole
thing to her. (I had told her about it before, but not in great detail,
considering the looks she was giving me. Now, however, I was armed with that
wonderful post about the effects we had at NATPE and on the industry, and I
think she was actually impressed this time.)

A few minutes later, she said, "You know, you can polish your furniture with

As I burst into hysterical laughter again she said, "No, really, I saw this on
the Today show or something like that. It was a show on different uses for
regular household items. The stuff is so oily you can polish your furniture
with it."

I thanked her profusely for this newfound knowledge and promised to share it
with my fellow listmembers so that they, too, could have SPAM furniture.

Excellent point! I have felt the same way myself, both in television and in
literature. I found it particularly disturbing the other day when I was
reading the X-Files list and someone was going on about the character of
"Scully" and yes they specifically said "Scully",not Gillian Anderson and
how they were surprised to see "Scully" smoking in an episode and then
finished this by saying that they were sure that she had quit before or
while she was pregnant! Wait a sec, "Scully" has never been pregnant or
had a baby! The actress did,but the character did not!
I hope that this isn't too far off topic from FK,but I do think that its
important that areas of fandom are addressed. Thanks

Thank you, JP and thanks for a great show!

I echo the sentiments of our fearless leader Laurie, we must continue
to fight! Soooo.....

So, you ask, what next? Well its kind of like the age old art of flirting,
and I'm sure you all know about that! We have their attention, so now its
time to reel them in! We have to keep their eyes and minds focused on FK!
"Cause we all know...if you don't keep 'em interested, their minds will wander
elsewhere! So, heres the deal, we are launching....

The prizes will be small, but as we all know, the true prize is one that
we can all win, a fourth season of Forever Knight.

The object of course is to "bring across" new viewers to FK AND to have them
write letters to TriStar,USA and their affiliate telling them that they are
a new viewer and who they were brought across by.

You might want to have a "Coming Across" Party. Invite friends over who
haven't seen FK and have some stationary all set up for them. Since you are
all experienced letter writers by now,you shouldn't have any problem helping
them put pen to paper. Remember to include all the important information,
name, address, occupation etc and what station you watched it on. You as
the host,if you are in an area where FK is shown at the wee hours of the
morning, write your syndie, let them know that you "brought across" these fans,
but that you would be able to bring over more if the time slot was better.
When you have a party planned, send a note off to TriStar,USA and your syndie
pledging X amount of new viewers, then try to double that pledge!

When you have your viewers together, send me a note, telling me how many and
who it was that you "brought across" There is more than one prize and we
are working on more..so obviously the people who "bring across" the most
will be the winners! And we'll all be winners in the long run!

Send you note to me at: PO Box 000, Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx, XX 00000

Susan G and I will be taking care of the prizes and luckily we live in the
same area.

Its a good excuse to meet new people and have your friends over and you
can sit a watch FK ,which is a lot more fun than Tupperware and doesn't
cost as much!

You can't see Lacroix and Tracy huh? I suppose in a way I was thinking of
the innocence of Fleur and then theres the old Dorothy and the witch
analogy,you know, I can't remember the exact words,but the part where she's
melting who ever thought such goodness or something could destroy such evil?
That part :) I would love to see Tracy's innocence captivate
LaCroix, possibly make him long for an innocence long since past, He
surrounds himself with such decadence otherwise. A nice change in diet perhaps?
And I agree, maybe it would make Nick sit up and take notice if Nat were
suddenly drawn to Javier's avant garde carefree attitude as opposed to
Nick's constant angst!

As far as I can tell, any symbol that is imbued with religious signifigance and
faith by the one who consecrated it will turn a vampire. We saw in Blackwing
how Nick was turned by a cerimonial raven knife; it burned his hand when he
touched it. Nick is far from Native American, so I think it is the faith of
the one who consecrated it. In that light, anything with religious signifigance
to a person with great faith will turn a vampire. There are some religions
where a weapon of some sort is imbued with holiness... These would turn a
vampire as well, regardless of what religion the vampire was (or if they were
religious at all)

Also... "Urs" is short for "Ursula," I'm pretty sure. As I recall, one of the
vampires called her Ursula.

Subject: Nick's *NOT* a Frenchman

Guys, Nick is from Brabant. Brabant is partly French-speaking -- the
other language is Flemish -- but it was *not* a part of France in Nick's
day and is now divided between the Netherlands and Belgium. In Nick's
lifetime it was an independent sovereign duchy. Being a native speaker
of French because he comes from a country where it is one of the
languages no more makes Nick a Frenchman than being an English speaker
from the United States makes me English.

The area that was Brabant in Nick's time (ca. 1200-1228) is now in
Belgium, so if you want to give him a nationality in modern terms,
Nick's a Belgian.

Btw, we can't be certain that LaCroix is an Italian in modern terms.
Yes, he was a Roman general, but that doesn't mean he was born in
what is now Italy. As was pointed out in the discussion of A More
Permanent Hell when some people wondered if a Roman general could
look like Nigel Bennett, he could easily have been a native of Gaul.
By the time of Pompeii, Gaul had been a Roman province, complete
with Romanized local population and upper class, for several hundred
years. There are historical examples of generals and other important
figures in LaCroix's lifetime who were Gauls or Iberians -- in modern
terms, Frenchmen and Spaniards. Given LaCroix's propensity for hanging
around France and his apparent assumption of a French identity in
the Middle Ages, I'd guess that he was of Gaulish birth.

I thought I would pass along this information. It looks like a great avenue
to get us some FK publicity. This group, born of the internet, has brought
the show back 3 times now and may even get another season out of it. Compare
it to the Save Startrek campaign 30 (oh my God - its been that long) years ago.
Look at how the net has changed us, and changed how fans influence a show.

This show is being covered by 80 editors and anchorpeople from top media
around the world - including Time, Newsweek, Nightline and CNN.

Anyway, I can't pitch the FK stuff to this venture. I am working for one
of the companies putting it on. But maybe we can find someone else to
spearhead this effort.

"You Ought to be in Pictures"

Rick Smolan and the team that created the "Day in the Life," "From Alice to
Ocean," and "Passage to Vietnam" photography books, want to shoot you and
your friends!

They're looking for the best examples about how Cyberspace is changing
peoples lives all over the world and if they like your story they may send
one of the world's top photographers to shoot pictures of you on Thursday,
February 8, 1996.

On that day over 1000 photographers armed with digital cameras will be
dispatched around the globe to show how Cyberspace is beginning to reach out
and affect people's lives. It's going to be one of the largest photographic
projects ever done and certainly one of the biggest collaborative Internet

The Focus of "24 Hours in Cyberspace: Painting on the Walls of the Digital
Cave" will be on the human stories behind the technology: the new ways in
which we work, play, learn, conduct business and interact. These photographs
will be transmitted digitally back to project headquarters in San Francisco
that same day, where an international team of 80 editors (representing Time,
Newsweek, Life, National Geographic, etc.), plus designers and programmers
will assemble a unique "instant" 24-hour World Wide Web site. The goal is to
produce unprecedented online, real-time photojournalism on a global scale.

The idea is to use the power of the Internet to let people around the world
both contribute and view images and stories of things that happened since
they woke up that day.

The goal here is NOT to show people sitting at computer terminals and it's
not about collecting lots of random "bits." The project is driven by
carefully researched assignments and is both photographic and edit driven.
The goal is to show in photographs and words how people's lives are being
affected as a results of being wired.

The leads can be about you, a friend, something you read about that was
cool, etc. A team of professional journalists on the 24 Hours staff will
follow up any interesting leads.

If you think you've got a great story to tell and would like to either
submit an assignment idea or learn more about how you can participate in
this cool project please send your ideas to: <a

That would be the Alexandra Digbat episode "Fatal Mistake" - and it was
really an extensive view of Ger's Stunt double as he climbs on a moving bus.

Iatrogenic is the term for a doctor or treatment created disease or problem.
I don't know the term for "hospital created".

Books? Books? Who has time for BOOKS what with all the FK mail,

Would I sound like an "old fogie" if I say that I can remember the

themselves, in a comfortable chair with a chocolate bar and 2 apples sitting
next to them?

Vachon and Nat...interesting, it would definitely make Nick stand up and

Me! Me, me, me! Pretty please? I think we might need "international
mediation" on this (or have I been watching the news too much?). I'll be the
international part, heh heh.

Just have to post on this one... I run Linux on my PC and I now have it
set to:
Play the FK, Due South, Muppets, or Red Dwarf themes when I log on
Play "the Nightcrawler's waiting for you" when I startup X-Windows
Play "I don't want a new one, I like that one" or "did you just think
to yourself, 'ooh, this would be a good day to spontaneously
combust'?"when I destroy a window
Play "what time is it, what day is it, what century is it?" when an event
I've scheduled occurs
Play "hasta la bye bye" when I exit X-Windows
It also plays random .au's on the hour, and flashes up random background
pictures/wallpaper on the hour

...well, since I annoyed y'all with constant status reports when

Subject: Results of the Tape Giveaway Contest!

Thanks to all who entered the tape giveaway contest! (In case you missed
the original post, I offered to give away a tape with first-generation
SP copies of "Night in Question" and "Fever" to the person who
sent me the most creative response.)

Sorry this has taken longer than expected, but I had some trouble finding
a temporary replacement for my computer monitor. The dinosaur-like VGA
monitor I grafted onto my computer seems to be working for now.

I got some fun responses, including a little tale about missing
"Night in Question" on TV due to an encounter with Nick and
LaCroix, as well as a response from someone who has used small children
to get their entire extended family to write letters to TPTB, but the
following entry has been declared the winner of the tape:

Well, Tippi, you're going to have trouble sculpting Janette since she
isn't in either of the episodes on this tape, but you will be able to
sculpt Nick's bellybutton in great detail. Or is that a stunt
bellybutton? Enquiring minds want to know!

Consolation prizes can be arranged for those who entered but did not win
-- e-mail me off-list and I'll see what I can do! I was shocked to learn
that there were people out there who missed "NiQ"!!

Although I think "Night in Question" requires a fair amount of background
information to enjoy, I agree that "Fever" and "Dead of Night" would be
good episodes to send to media types who need to be brought across.
Has anyone explored the legality of doing this? Would that constitute
"commercial use"?
