Everyone can use a little enthusiasm about now! Laurie Fenster ----------- 'FOREVER KNIGHT' fans rise up on the Internet By Wayne Walley, New York Bureau Chief The Friends of Forever Knight are sometimes described as the 1990s version of Trekkies. But these ardent fans of the supernatural police drama "Forever Knight," which has been cancelled by USA Network and is clinging to life in syndication, seem to be more organized and sophisticated than those backing other television shows. Through the Internet and online services, the Friends of Forever Knight have mobilized faster and are becoming a force behind keeping the show alive. Six members from the West Coast paid their own way to Las Vegas this week to spread the word at the National Association of Television Program Executives convention. Others donated or pledged funds to cover the cost of the tote bags and flyers the six are giving out this week at the convention center. This might make it seem like they're supported by Columbia TriStar Television, the producers and distributors of the syndicated series, but the Friends and Columbi TriStar say they are acting on their own. "These are not ringers of any sort. They are on an adventure to save our favorite show," said Catherine Siemann, an English literature doctorate candidate at Columbia University and one of three Friends of Forever Knight who have volunteered as "point people" to take phone calls from media and other interested parties. Annmarie McKee Fitzgerald, a police communications officer in New Jersey and another point person, said the group has representatives on America Online, CompuServe, Prodigy and Genie in addition to a 900 member mailing list. She said one of the "delegates" at NATPE will have a laptop computer to keep the group apprised. "We picked up a rumor in December that it would be canceled by USA Network, and we got confirmation," Ms. Fitzgerald said. "It snowballed from there, and we've divided up responsibilities." They've organized "appreciation" weeks, too, honoring fans, sponsors and TV station affiliates by sending flowers and letters and making phone calls to thank people for support. "Some people even delivered home-baked cookies to TV stations," she said. The group, however, does more than just support the show. Ms. Fitzgerald said the Friends of Forever Knight collected $6,000 in the last month to donate to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, a favored charity of the show's star, Geraint Wyn Davies. Next, she said, is a blood drive, asking fans of the show to go to their local Red Cross centers. "The Internet has become a tremendous vehicle for them. It's replaced the old letter writing campaign and is more efficient and more timely," said Andy Kaplan, senior executive vice president of Columbia TriStar Television. The show's producers and stars often go online, participating in live chats, too. Mr. Kaplan said Columbia TriStar is committed to completing the show's latest season in syndication, which will give the company about 70 episodes. Mr. Kaplan said it has taken a "patchwork of revenue streams" from syndication, cable and overseas to keep the show going. A decision about next year hasn't been made, but those 70 hours wil likely find a home either in syndication as a strip or on a cable network such as the Sci-Fi Channel. "Who knows? Fans of this show are loyal and targeted. Maybe it will be around forever and maybe spawn a 'Forever Knight: The Next Generation," Mr. Kaplan said. The series, launched in May 1992 as part of CBS' late-night program block, "Crimetime After Primetime," was rerun the second year and then moved into first-run syndication in September 1994 with new episodes when the late-night block was replaced by "Late Show With David Letterman." This year USA Network picked it up as an original series, with new episodes telecast on the cable network and in first-run. USA, however, said in December that it was canceling the show, spawning a "Save Forever Knight" site on the World Wide Web and a unique campaign to get USA to reconsider. The group asked its members to send lottery tickets to USA, asking that any winnings go toward keeping the show on the air. "It was a ploy to get attention, but if one of the tickets hit, it would be enough to fund more episodes," Ms. Fitzgerald said. "We thought it would be different than just letters saying 'save our show.' We're not a bunch of fanatics in T-shirts. We're after information, getting it out to the Internet, and asking people to spread it further." One member, Ms. Fitzgerald said, even did a demographic list of the group, finding that most are college educated or in college. Ms. Siemann said the Friends of Forever Knight include attorneys, scientists, college professors and students. "We have lives, believe me. I guess ths is just something we felt. I have a degree in English literature. I don't watch much television. I thought it would be a giggle when I first watched it, but it was fantastic," she said. Then, instead of talking about the virtues of the show and the reasons why she likes it, Ms. Siemann listed household and demographic ratings from the November sweeps in markets like Houston, San Francisco, and Orlando, Florida. "We feel if the show were marketed properly it would be a huge hit, but stations are not giving it favorable time slots," she said. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jan 1996 09:31:13 -0500 From: Lynn McAlpine <Chatelyne@a.......> Subject: Who's sexier? Excuse this form letter, but I'm getting a great many letters about the series, as I'm sure you understand. As you may know, Sci-Fi Entertainment magazine is owned in partnership by the publishing outfit Sovereign Media, Inc. and the Sci-Fi Channel; and the Channel is owned by the USA Networks, whose recent decision to discontinue its broadcast of "Forever Knight" began the current controversy. The deadline for our most recent issue was January 4, prior to USA's official announcement of their decision. However, we did recieve a few early letters from fans who heard about the decision prior to the announce date, and two of these will appear in our next (March-dated) issue, due on stands at the end of February. The Channel and USA Networks have always been very good about allowing us to run this magazine as we see fit. However, since many readers regard us as an "official voice" of the Channel (and therefore of the USA Networks), it seemed wise to consult with USA on the manner in which we would reply to these letters. My usual contact at programming is away at the NATPE convention this week, so I spoke to a few people at USA before reaching the media relations department. One programming person told me that everyone there is fully aware of the organized fan effort. They seemed particularly amazed at the candygrams. Anyway, it was eventually decided that I should speak with the "Media Relations" department, who told me that it is highly unlikely that USA will reverse their decision. After a brief conversation with him, I wrote the following response, which will be printed along with two letters from FK fans. Bob Martin ("Ed Flixman") editor, Sci-Fi Entertainment From our next letter column: Dear Sir: I particularly enjoyed the article about Forever Knight in the November issue, and the article about "From Dusk Till Dawn" in the current (December) issue. I find the "vampire concept" entertaining, and those two productions provide an excellent contrast in approach to the topic. Please write more often about Forever Knight. It's definitely one of my favorite shows, and I just don't see emough articles about these wonderful characters (the actors are pretty good too)! Sherri L. Godsey Plano, TX Thank you so much for the article "Life After Death" on the TV show Forever Knight that appeared in your December 1995 issue. Forever Knight truly has risen above terrible time slots in syndication, little publicity, and several network switches to live again, and has gained a steadily growing following. It conveys a message about hope without being preachy, and appeals to the common human need to rise above adversity and win in what should be a no-win scenario. Without the support of publications like Sci-Fi Entertainment, this little show might go quietly into the night again...as its new network may be on the verge of staking it mid-season. Forever Knight deserves a better fate than this. I hope your magazine will continue to support the show! Lisa Wolters MVRJasper@a....... We continue to support the show Forever Knight, its cast and crew and fans; and we applaud the loyalty the show's fans have displayed in recent weeks. We understand from our friends at the USA Networks that there are concrete business reasons for their recent decision to discontinue the show. Should Forever Knight continue for a fourth season in syndication, we will be delighted to continue our coverage. > > Sir, > I was wondering if you were aware of the impending cancellation of one of the > most evocative and creative shows on TV now, Forever Knight. These guys are tenured been-working-for-the-university-longer-than-you've-been-alive kind of old Finnish guys with an attitude. So I say "Yeah, what do you know about it?" And ya know what? They proceeded to tell me all this stuff about NATPE and the FK Home Page (which I manage) and the SOS-FK Home Page and TriStar and *ESPECIALLY* the article in _Electronic Media_. They even knew about the charity drive and the blood drive. And they called the local service providers for us. It occurred to us, but one-day memberships were $250 a pop, and we just didn't have that kind of resources.... >you must have bunches of bags left over. Do the people who donated to Laurie >get one? We have some left. Yes, we only gave out in the LOBBY for about the first half-hour, but then we were handing them out until dark outside. I calculate that roughly 10% of the attendees received a bag and a flyer. In fact, by the end of the day, I was getting turned down by people who said things like "I got one this morning" or "I already have three of those!" <vbg> For comparison, Toni, who runs a radio station, said that people with a BOOTH at a trade show like NATPE consider that they've done well if they give stuff to 20% of the attendees. So, for a group that didn't even have a booth, I think 10% coverage is pretty Durned good! Not to mention all the people who will pick them up in the hotels, and the stack we left in the press room. Sherry something?) said she ordered all that stuff for NATPE before USA pulled out, when they were still planning on having Ger there. What Catherine didn't know is, Toni and I scoped out the NATPE store Tues night, and there was *nothing* FK related there! So I'd be willing to bet Tri-Star had their promo people put them out when they realized we *had* shown up. That, in and of itself, is a coup, I think! (Did I mention they sold out of mugs? I got the last one!) We *did* offer to introduce the nice PR person to a group of people who would *love* to buy any leftovers, but she changed the subject.... I think we scared her a little. <g> >Aha. Je comprends. You snuck in :) Yup. Angela (Stealth) Lai found us a back entrance. <g> And would the person who forwarded the request from Bjo Trimble please contact me, or have Bjo contact me? I grabbed her a ton of stuff, and need to arrange for shipping..... One last thing: as soon as I post my NATPE report, I'm going to be setting this list nomail for a while. I am, frankly, burning out. I need some time away from the War (consider it Hazardous Duty leave) to catch up on real-life concerns like dishes, laundry, housework.... and if she doesn't get some quality time soon, I suspect Tuppence the Temple Cat will file for divorce. Dianne has promised to keep me updated on anything vital (like, TriStar announcing a fourth season). I expect to be nomail for at least a week, maybe longer. Keep going, guys! Just because Battle Fatigue is making me drop out, don't you quit! Paula? Eva? something? Help! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jan 1996 11:22:16 EST From: MS LYNNE R ACKERMAN <GNBV32C@p.......> Subject: Sending packages to Canada Sorry guys, I should have posted this long ago. Hopefully it will still help some people though. When you fill out the Customs forms for any packages you're sending up here, don't put any dollar amount where it asks the value of what you're sending. Just put "NCV" for "No Commercial Value". Otherwise, even though you've marked that it's a gift, the people who receive it may have to pay duty on the package. Or they may have to make a special trip to the Customs office to pick it up. Especially because you're sending it to a business office. The Customs forms are very confusing, they try to be too many things in too many different contingencies. Most people don't know that the dollar value on the form only applies to businesses sending merchandise. It has no relevance to ordinary people sending things. Here goes: > Somehow, between getting out of all those nice clothes (aaah!) and going out >to dinner, we managed to waste about four hours that I still can't >account for. I can. You and Cherri were walking the Strip, dropping brochures (I repeat, they were MUCH too classy-looking to be called flyers) at every hotel you could, while Debbie and Catherine was contacting our Vegas affiliate (Hi, Linda!) and Toni and Angela were delivering those gorgeous flowers to the EM people. I was falling asleep on the bed writing postcards to the crew. >But I'm getting ahead of myself. When writing a story, start at the >beginning... She's right, yknow.... I got into Vegas about 2pm Tues. Plane was delayed because of fog in St Louis. I checked into the hotel-- June, you did us proud, we were *literally* across the parking lot from the convention center!-- and as I was hanging my 'work clothes' up, the first bouquet of flowers was delivered! It was a real spirit-lifter, and you three (Laurie, Apache, and Lana) were great for thinking of it! Then I unpacked some brochures (I will *not* call them flyers) and bags, and made up three 'goodie packs'. One for the EM people, one for On Time Promotions (who rushed the bag order for us) and one for Alice, who was working NATPE as part of her job. Contacted Linda, who lives in Vegas, and got instructions on how to find all the hotels. Three taxi rides (the second taxi driver was a fan, and promised to call his syndie station when he got off work) and a trolley later (with packets dropped off *and* flyers left at the Alexis Park Resort *and* the MGM Grand), I discovered that Toni had checked in. We strolled across the parking lot to the convention center and scoped out the lobby. The security guards downstairs were very officious, and turned us away from the main hall, but we *did* find the freebie bins, and grabbed a couple of Electronic Medias. Then we went upstairs, and scoped out the NATPE store. A life-size cutout of Hercules, lots of stuff for X-files, Party of Five, etc, etc, but no FK stuff that *I* saw, at least then. We wandered around the upstairs lobby a bit, then managed to sneak by a distracted guard and actually get onto the second-floor floor. Wandered around, grabbing anything SF-related in sight for Bjo. Toni did her stealth routine in the Tri-Star booth, and we both talked to the women at Paragon. After that, we had dinner at Treasure Island and by the time that was finished, the LA contingent had checked in. >Wed morning I walked over to the Sands to get a copy of the daily NATPE report (we were hoping to find out where KK's award presentation would be) and saw the mid-week NATPE issue of EM. Picked up a copy for the daily schedule inside the front cover, and wandered out past the pool turning pages... and had to *seriously* fight to keep myself from blowing my 'corporate image' by jumping up and down and shouting *YES!!!! WE DID IT!!! YAhoooo!** when I saw the article on page 4! Needless to say, I rushed immediately back to the room, grinning like a fool the whole way, and shared it with all the others. >Diane was hitting escape velocity. :) But then we all read the article, and >we were all in orbit. Somewhere around Jupiter, *I*'d say. It was really the perfect way to start the day, and we decided then and there that, since we couldn't take our bouquets home, anyway, we'd replace the florist cards with our generic FoFK cards and drop them off at the EM people's hotel.... >So we loaded up the car and all our bags, and headed out. > Unfortunately, yes, we did get kicked out in very short order. Myself, I was working the far left side of the lobby, where mostly foreign folks seemed to be going. Think I may have been a little *too* eager, and got too close to the convention doors. I wasn't exactly kicked out, just told I couldn't hand anything out in the lobby. They were really very nice about it, if very stuffed-shirt. Then I went in search of another FoFK, and found Dianne at the top of the escalator. A minute after I arrived, a woman coming up the escalator spotted our badges, and gushed about the show for a minute. (This happened *all day* and really helped us keep going!) Then she asked us to stop by her booth(!) because her friend in there would want to meet us. We explained about not having memberships, so she said she'd send her out, and would we be here? We said yes, and a minute later a security guard told Dianne *she* couldn't hand stuff out, either. He did say we could wait there for the woman (who never came back) and give business cards to people who asked. So we waited.... but she never came back. Finally gave up and went to lunch, after checking out the locations of the rest of our team. Gave brochures and bags to our waitresses, who promised to watch the show on USA Tuesday, and dropped a stack of brochures in the Treasure Island lobby. Then met our landlady on the way back, walking down the Strip, and explained to her why someone who didn't like vampires *or* cop shows *would* like FK, and *she* promised to watch it! <g> Dropped brochures at the Sands, and back into action! Dianne, for those of you that don't know, is a very fair, very pale redhead-- almost strawberry blond-- and she spent HOURS standing in the bright Vegas sun to hand out bags. When Cherri and I got back from lunch, we took over her spot and sent her under cover to keep from getting sunburned worse than she already was. Shortly after that, one of the guys I handed a flyer to doubled back, and asked me why USA was cancelling. About half-way through my answer, I realized his card said "PRESS" and "Spin the Bottle"-- anybody heard of these guys? Anyway, I explained about the split showing, and how that meant USA was getting the equivalent of second-run ratings, and he got all indignant and said (not an exact quote) "USA shows nothing but re-runs. I don't understand why they wouldn't support a great first-run show like FK." Then he asked me what cons we'd gotten our demographics from! I said, "Several cons, and a survery on the Internet". We chatted another minute or so, and *then*, when I asked him to ask Tri-Star for a fourth season, he said, "I'm seeing Kay this afternoon, I'll ask her!" and I nearly lost it! Of course, I don't *know*, but I entertain this fantasy that Ms. Koplovitz was in the middle of a press conference/interview on her award, and this reporter jumps up and asks her "Why is USA cancelling an excellent show like Forever Knight? Do you know the fans are here in support of the show?" Like I said, my own personal fantasy... And several times, people would rush by us, shaking their heads, *then* spot that classy-looking brochure you all worked so hard to get ready for us, and double back and take one! That, and the number of people who *recognized* and *liked* the show, really blew us all away. Never, ever again will *any* of us even *consider* that no-one out there knows about the show! *Then* Paul DaCruz from EM wandered by, just as Dianne and Catherine got back from lunch. He said all sorts of nice things about us, and explained how he'd pitched the article, and how he thought we (meaning, I think, FoFK and EM) were a great 'partnership' or 'team' or 'combo' or some sort of thing-that-fits-nicely-together type phrase. Wanted a picture of us to take back to 'show around the office', but his camera wasn't working. We offered to mail him some, and swapped business cards. *That* impressed him, I think, because he said "Wow! You guys did business cards for this, too?" We just smiled, and pointed out that it was amazing what you can do with a laser printer and a PC these days, wasn't it? <g> Shortly after this, it started to get dark, and a few 'ladies of the evening' started wandering by (black lace body stockings, *way* too much makeup, and looking *nothing* like the ones from FWTD) so we decided it was time to stop standing on streetcorners smiling at strange men. <vbg> We went back inside and bought the last two FK mugs. I asked the guy running the booth if he had any *more* FK stuff, and he rooted out some T-shirts (there weren't any on the racks). They're identical to the ones Parriott gave you folks lucky enough to fight the first renewal campaign, and very, VERY cool. Then we got Angela to show us her secret way onto the convention center floor, and joined Toni & Catherine in the Tri-Star booth. I think the poor PR flack was a little overwhelmed by us all. I'll let Toni give you the details of what she said, since she was there for the whole time, and I only got in on the last few minutes. By then, everybody was leaving, so we gathered ourselves up and went back to our hotel rooms to turn back into our Real Selves. I pretty much collapsed, while the other six ran various errands (see the top of my post), but I managed to fill out postcards for 12 crewmembers, plus Lisa Ryder. When the rest got back, we finished filling out the postcards (we were all pretty much on the verge of collapse by that time) and then I got *tricked* into waking up (you sneak, Toni! <g>) and going to look at The Royal White Tigers Of Sigfried And Roy at the Mirage. Got to see the volcano explode, too. Bonnie, we *did* win on a slot with your quarters-- got $2.50 back on a $.75 stake-- but then got greedy and lost it again. Oh, well... Dinner at the California Pizza Palace (I think...) and then Toni and I had to dash for the airport. All in all, I had a great time, and feel like we really accomplished something. However, I'm feeling rather burned out, so I'm going no-mail for a while. I'm sure someone will step in to carry on the fight for us. BTW-- at the next con you're at, look out for seven madwomen in black, embroidered FK shirts and khaki, black-billed baseball caps with "The Few, The Proud, The FK NAPTE Strike Force" embroidered on them. Toni had them made up for us (we wore them to dinner!) and we all promised to wear them at the next cons we go to. Keep fighting, guys!
