The Nielsen ratings system is not accurate? *GASP* NO! REALLY! Well duh.
ALthough I detest Rupert Murdoch who owns FOX, and I seriously question the
motive for blasting the Nielsesn I must say. ( takes a big breath) I agree
with Chase Casey. There I said it.
He has simple stated what a lot of people in the business have suspected for
a long time. The Nielsens even blew their reputation in a Newsweek article
about the how many people use the internet. Turns out they cooked the numbers
hence the "no comment" when asked about the accuracy of the article.
Incidently if any of you all out there have AOL you can read about Casey's
blasting of Nielsen at NAPTE in the entertainment section under Entertainment
wire. It's in the Television section. Hey maybe Reuter's ( the news service)
will have something about SOSFK at NAPTE.
At any rate the Nielsen rating sytem is fast becoming outmoded and having a
monopoly in the industry breeds corruption ( here's a little something to
insure you give me good numbers) and inaccuracy.

You watch the show, you like a particular character better than the others
(not saying you don't also like the others, but you like this particular one
best), you have then decided which faction you belong to. One's friends may
try to "bring you across" by influencing you to be favorably disposed towards
a certain character, but it's all low-key. No one forces anyone to choose.
IT IS FOR FUN!!!

Occasionally, also in jest, one is bequeathed a title. For instance:

My mailer was acting up, putting *really, really* annoying lines (//)at the
end of each sentence. Another list member who'd written a story in which
vampire mosquitos were killed by getting staked with spearmint-flavored
toothpicks (the kind you find in restaurants by the cashier), dubbed me
"Keeper of the Spearmint-flavored Toothpicks" (or something like that) in
honor of the little lines. I was the Keeper until I got the mailer
straightened out. I was happy to relinquish that title, the lines were
driving me crazy!

On the other hand, I came up with "Cousine"--the feminine of `cousin' in
French. I figured that since women Janette-appreciaters were called
"Ravenettes" as opposed to male "Ravens", and Nick-fanciers are "Knights" and
"Knighties", we cousins needed a feminine version, too. So, you can give
yourself a definitive title, and if it fits, is humourous & you like it enough
to live with it, it's cool. (So far, I seem to be the lone Cousine, but
wouldn't mind at all if someone else called herself one, too.)

Tippi: if you like all the characters and don't wanna pick a side, you are a
Die-Hard. Or not. Whatever you like.

Allison asked what a gaffer does...the poor fellow tapes down wires to the
floor and that sort of thing, so people doin't trip and wires don't get yanked
out of sockets unexpectedly...at least, that's what our stage crew gaffer does
at school...

Don Durham Commented:

I think that this is where our communication with the local syndies comes into
play. If C-TS knows that they really have a burgeoning market, then it is
worth their while to make as many EP's as they can get. If we badger our
locals to ask for more (new) EP's then that may be what we get.

I mean I love the show, but I am not going to be able to watch LNMTA 20 times.
How many ST fans still watch every ST that comes on -- I have finally gotten
tired of them (after 30-40 times per EP).

The way shows are sold in syndication, though, is BY THE EPISODE. So,
the more episodes you have, the more money. (E.g. $5000 x 70 eps x 3
showings vs. $5000 x 92 eps x 3 showings)

Thing is though, it's very expensive to produce a show, even in Canada.
And it's hard to recoup when the show is typically shown in late night,
so TriStar can't charge very much for their advertising or to sell it
to syndies.

The analogy with Alien Nation could be apt. FOX stopped making it,
despite decent ratings and syndie protests, because it was so
expensive.
