Subject: Need a French lesson

Okay, Cousins. Give me a hand here. For some reason, the French lessons I
took in kindergarten haven't stuck with me lo these many years.

I'm a third-season newbie, so much of this is unfamiliar to me. When
watching "Sons of Belial" last night, I was interested to hear Nick
pronounce LaCroix's name. Now, he was under some stress when he called to
LaCroix, so his pronounciation may have been a little strained. But I want
to know how LaCroix would wish to have his own name spoken.

Being a southern U.S. resident, my tendency would be to say La CROY.

What little I recall of French, I would guess the pronounciation to be
La QUA (with that almost imperceptible hint of koo-ah and the "ah" almost
swallowed).

It sounded to me like Nick said La KWAA.

Okay, it's all retentive, I know. But these things interest me.

Thanks for pointers!

Hey, Hey Everyone :)

Just a gentle reminder, the charity drive is open until February
14th, so if you haven't sent, you still have plenty of time :)

That said, our new total is . . .

                        $6,245.50

And, if the post about our sending half the electronic postcards is
true, we've already surpassed Sony's donation and I think we all
deserve a hand <clap-clap-clap, standing ovation, wolf whistle>

For those still feeling a little discouraged, the happy quote
fanatic <wave> has come up with the following:

"Who Lives Most?"
We live in deeds, not years;
in thoughts, not breaths;
in feelings, not in figures on a dial.
We should count time by heart-throbs.
He most lives who thinks most, feels noblest, acts the best.
                                        -- Philip James Bailey --

We, my friends, are most certaining acting the best :)

Nobody is. It's just that I was a bit stressed out when I wrote this,

Anyway, I later realized my message never made it to the list! That's

Just to unmong one rumor that's been floating around: this
moving-to-California deal started a Long Time Ago. GWD bought the Santa
Barbara house in mid-May 1995. That is before season three even began
filming. Accordingly, I believe him when he says the big concern about a
fourth season is getting one that is adequately funded.

Dianne, Diane E., Cyn, Lisa, and everyone,

I just want to underscore what Laurie CF said on this point. We
wrote and asked point-blank if they wanted to bail, if they *wanted* not
to have a fourth season. We *asked* to be told if they wanted us not to
go forward, not to spend money on various things, not to write letters,
and so on.

*No one* wrote back and said, yeah, please quit.

There may be plenty of skepticism about whether it's possible, but
to the extent that we got signals, they were affirmative. And, speaking
for myself, I've heard from a few people that the PAF contributions in
particular really knock them out.

One person at Paragon [old huge-news], apprised of the
resolutions regarding Spam and other matters, expressed [with just the
*smallest* note of sarcasm] pleasure at being able to help so many people
with their good resolves.

Cheers,

Laura

Well, I'll ask my actual french friend (who knows stuff like the midi
accent), but according to my limited "Parisian" student french (and my
linguistics training), it would be
La Kr(uvular "r". It's said back in the throat with the uvula (that
danglely thingy))-ah.
Or the way I would usually say it, La Krah.
The uvular "r"
can sound a bit like a "w", because it's a liquid said in roughly the same
area of the throat.

Where's Brabant anyway? What type of french accent would they have there?
hm... oh well, language drift would've probably changed the accent by now
anyway.

What I want to know is why I speak German and Russian (and even Gaelic)
with a French accent. My German teacher says that I sound like Swiss-French.
Of course, I don't speak *French* with a french accent. *sigh*

January 15, 1996

Dear Patrick:

Thank you for your letter and concern for "Forever Knight." We ap-
preciate hearing from our viewers.

Our contract for "Forever Knight" does not expire until September 8,
1996. I've checked with the syndicator for the program and I've been assured
that we will receive a full season of new episodes.

As for the fourth season, it has not been offered to us yet, but we
will keep your comments in mind when it comes time to renew.

Sincerely,

Wendy R.E. Logsdon

Then she even tells me that for the next two weeks, FK will be pre-
empted, but will run at later than scheduled times. Nice of her.

I realize that she didn't get the message -- that if she wants a
fourth season, she's gonna have to *ASK* for it. I'm going to call the sta-
tion and tell her that.

First, an extremely heartfelt thank you to everyone who's added their
voice to the cry of "Don't give up yet!" Count this as a me, too.
Guys, we've been "engaged" to the idea of saving FK for almost a
month now, and as "wedding day" (NATPE) approaches, we're bound to
get cold feet and have second thoughts. So much has happened during
our "wedding planning stage"--triumph, tears, pressure--and now, at
the dress rehearsal, some of the relatives and guests are getting
grumpy and tired. ;) But we CAN NOT let this ruin "our day"!!!!!
Committment ain't easy. It's big. It's way-scary. There are no
guarantees. And the minute someone else shows a sliver of
hesitation, it can give us an easy way out...if we lack the courage
to keep on keeping on.
We've already DONE the really hard things. We're almost to the
top of that hill. And we won't know what's on the other side for us
unless we keep on climbing. OK, so now I'm mixing metaphors. You
get the idea! ;)
I'll admit that I've had my own doubts and fears, wondered what
the heck I'm doing with so much of my free time--and I haven't done
nearly as much as many of you!! But I'm in this for the long haul.
As Nat keeps pounding into Nick, no one said this would be easy.

I'm not a Cousin or even a native French speaker, but I studied French
for about 11 years so maybe I can help.

Re: the pronunciation of LaCroix:

No, it's not La CROY. No, it's not even La QUA. Nor La KWAA. (I'm not
clear on the difference you heard between the last two. Was the "a" more
drawn out?)

It's actually difficult to write in English. It is properly pronounced
La KRWA. The R isn't silent, but it's a French R, spoken in the back of
the throat. There isn't a direct equivalent of this sound in English.

Usually it's said without drawing out the "a" sound, but it probably
depends on context. If Ger was trying to be dramatic, he might have
drawn out LaCroix's name a bit.

Native speakers of French, please feel free to correct me! And if anyone
speaks French with the accent of a 1st century Roman general who learned
French as a second language, all the better!

BTW, has this topic been as popular on the list in the past as the
pronunciation of "Geraint"? (Oops, didn't mean to bring up *that* one
again...) ;)

Dear All,
Hola! I have just finished reading all the posts on-list since
Saturday... BBS was being finnicky...if that's how you spell it. It's
amazing how fast going through 350 messages is when you don't have any
homework or any other pressing engagements :)

Re: UPN etc... I own stock in Viacom which owns Paramount (and MTV, too I
hear). Do you think if I wrote to them those 50 shares would be of any
interest to them? Not a whole lot of stock, by a whole lot of my $$ :)

Re: Ger moving to Santa Barbara. First of all, ick, why would you want
to move here? Seriously, tho, the stars of X-Files are LA folk, and
they're filming season 3 all in Vancouver...and Gillian Anderson has a
new baby too (named Piper... yep, been on Forkni-l too long :) So it's
not bad that he's moving.

Re: flyers. I did a big flyer thing this weekend that I mentioned I was
going to last week. I went to the Burbank X-Files convention that
boasted both Chris Carter and Gillian Anderson. Anyway, I was sooooo
jealous about the *amazing* amount of merchandising this one show has. I
had printed up 1000 flyers for this endeavour, and I managed to hand out
about 800 of them at the con. I got lots of people who were saying they
were going to write.. even one woman who'd stopped watching due to the
changes this season (after I mentioned DD would be back for another
episode). I gave the original flyer to a woman who wanted to copy them
and give them out in San Diego.. not that the LA info would be too
useful, but I'm sure they're intelligent enough to write to their own
syndie station, as opposed to the LA one. I also gave a whole bunch to a
woman who I saw selling some FK pictures there, and she said she would
send them out in the mail when people order stuff from her. She said she
was from Chicago, so hopefully they will write to the right people there
:) I have recently given out a few flyers while wandering around a movie
theatre, and I put out about 80 or so in 3 comic books stores. With the
hundred left, I hope to hit a few more stores, but if not, I will end up
putting them up at the airport, since I'm leaving this Saturday for
school (WAIL WAIL! But I don't *wanna* study!). If anyone in the LA area
wants them, just holler... I'm WTHO near Pasadena, tho... Let me just
say.. I am so sick of the X-Files it's not even funny... hopefully I will
get over it by Friday... just shows that I like FK infinitely more than
the X-Files :)

Subject: Satellite folks? LA

Dear All,
I'm sorry I forgot to include this in the post I just sent, but does
anyone in the LA area have a satellite? I really, really, really want to
see Fever before I go, but alas, I will be on a plane by the time KCBS
shows it. I would worship you forever if I could a)come watch it off of
your satellite or b)come watch it off of a tape you made of it off of
your satellite :) Please? with sugar and spice? I won't get to see any
FK for 5 whole months!!
Also, would anyone consider making, or consider making an extra copy of
the rest of this season? I'm making my mother tape it, but she forgets,
and I can't call to remind her anymore, and KCBS may move it arbitrarily
sometime, even tho thankfully they haven't done so so far. I may not
need it.. my mother may divinely remember every week to tape it, but just
in case...?

Subject: SOS-NAPTE bag fund update 1/17

Sorry for the delay in the update (though if you read my going-to-NATPE post
yesterday, you got a mini one!) Toni and I were finalizing things on the
flyers and, frankly, I forgot to post.

The current Pledge Total for the NATPE bag fund is:

               >>>    $3440    <<<

Now, before you all start chanting "We made it, we MADE it!" <g> remember that
we've got to cover 2-day UPS shipping to Vegas for the bags. That's 10 35-lb
boxes, folks. Probably *quite* a chunk of change.

They'll be shipping tomorrow, and the bill will arrive on Laurie's doorstep
shortly thereafter.

Not to mention the NATPE ad, which Laurie is also collecting for. $4700 and
HOW much? :)

If you still have any money to contribute, mail it to:

SOS-FK
P.O. Box 00000
Xxxxxxxxxx, XX 00000-0000

Make the check out to Laurie Cohen Fenster, NOT to me! I'm in Wisconsin, and
there's no way I can get out to NYC to sign the things. Mark it NATPE BAGS,
or NATPE AD, if you insist on one or the other, or just NATPE, and we'll split
it between the two. :)

Then e-mail me with the amount, which fund it's for, and your full name (so we
can match it against your check when it arrives).

Dianne and I are standing here giggling about what we did
today. This is a feeling that's difficult to describe. But,
here goes:

We went to the offices of the Pediatric AIDS Foundation in
Santa Monica this afternoon (after only making ONE wrong turn
getting off the freeway!) and delivered close to $6,000 in
donations to their hands. They were pleased, amazed and
impressed by our efforts...both the way and the speed with
which we managed to put together a donation of this size, and
for the reasons we did it. They were really happy to see us too!

They had the director come down from her office to be in the
picture with me and Doreen Lane, the woman Lisa has been
working with...Dianne took the pictures and we just came from
the computer lab at CalTech where we scanned one in (just to
prove that we didn't run off with the money). Go to

http://www.clever.net/moonlight/other/paf2.GIF...we know the
picture is big, but we had problems with the scanner, and I
have to catch a plane home in the next hour...

[And Cynthia's not that pale, really... just my cheap camera...
besides, she's in full sun, so no vamp speculation, please :-)))
oh, Cynthia's in the middle with Doreen on the left and Bonnie
(the Director) on the right. --Dianne]

And I must admit, I'm still floored that I'm shorter than that
really short person on my right...

[she's just lucky *I* was ten feet below taking the photo! <vwg>
--Dianne]

When we were done, we dropped the film off for developing and
took a long walk on the beach. I'm still trying to understand
why this feels as good as it does...the mysteries of doing
things for others I suppose...

[Really, we've both been grinning and talking back and forth
about this great feeling-- the one neither of us has found
words for <*some* writers, huh? <g>-- all afternoon. --Dianne]

Kudos to Lisa Prince for making this happen and to all of you
for donating the money that gave us such a wonderful
afternoon...

(oh, and did something really *wonderful* for a good cause too
<vbg>)

Now we're off to write letters to Paragon... pix enclosed!

Cynthia & Dianne (a.k.a Mutt & Jeff)
[Cynthia made me put that, I have no idea what she's talking
about! :-))) --Dianne]

Lillian said, about the balloons:

I fly out at 9am Tuesday. Picked up my plane tickets this afternoon.

The LA Five are driving out that afternoon, and Toni is flying out that day.

Who, me? Busy? :) Well, maybe just a little.

My contact, the non-net-connected co-founder of Forever Knight Canada (a fan
club), has a working relationship with a member of the permanent production
staff (One of the assistants). She called her contact, found out when the
cast would be filming, and brought over the balloons. Unfortunately, they
were *literally* filming at the time, which meant the set was off-limits, so
instead of a picture of the balloons with Ger, Cath, & Nigel, she got a
picture with the assistant director & Mr. Gray's assistant. :) She's mailing
it to me. She said the staff was "blown away" by the balloons. Apparently,
they had no idea we were still pluggin' away down here....

Gotta go update the Strike Force now...

NATPE bag total is up to $3500! (that's pledges, not actual money)

well, i have awelsh friend from aberystwyth (i hope i spelled that right)
who says it's pronounced "Gehr-aynet". But are there dialects of Welsh,
like maybe somebody from cardiff would pronounce it differently.

By the way, ive noticed a lot of welshman popping up in my fave shows recently:
anthony hopkins, richard burton (yumum), peter wingfield (Methos on
Highlander), Ger and someone else i cant remember right now. weird huh? and
on that note i will recite a joke i heard about Burton:
One day Richard Burton and Alain Delon were practicing
swordfighting on the set of a movie. Alain got a wee bit too close for
Burton who ducked a yelled,

"Watch out! There are thousands of Frenchmen, but, kill me and you
kill one-sixth of all the Welsh actors in the world!!"
ha ha

IT'S ON! GERAINT WYN DAVIES CONFERENCE ON AOL!!!!

I'm happy to report that the hoped for Geraint Wyn Davies Conference in the
OMNI Online area of America Online is back on! Ger will be in the Odeon
Auditorium on Saturday, January 20 (yes, THIS Saturday!) at 10 pm Eastern
Time!

To reach the conference:
1. Go to keyword: OMNI (if you've never been there before, come early to
download the artwork - it's a free download and well worth it, but will take
a little extra time)
2. Click on OMNI CHAT
3. Click on Auditorium Entrances
4. Click on ENTER The Odeon

How an AOL conference works:
When you arrive in the auditorium, you will automatically be seated in
a particular row. Unlike a chat, you can only chat with your row members
during the conference. The lines from Geraint (typed by OMNI Editor Erin
Murphy who will be on the phone with Ger) and the lines from the moderator
will be seen on the screen along with your row chat. You can check to see who
is in your row, change rows, and send questions to the moderator for Geraint
to answer. (DON'T try to send him or the moderator an instant message - you
can't.) It's like watching an interview on stage while talking to the people
with whom you're sitting out in the audience. Use the buttons on the top of
your conference screen for these various functions (INTERACT, CHAT ROWS,
PEOPLE). If an "usher" with the name OMNI at the front of their screenname
appears in your row, they're just there to see if you have any questions or
need help. (And they're ALL my friends, so be nice!)

Enjoy yourself! Be sure you drop an e-mail of thanks to ErinM@a.......!
